DIY spacers in tiny 1 car garage w/pics.

Do you have a tiny, 1-car garage and aren’t sure you can do your own mods without ample room and high tech equipment? I’m in that same boat and here’s how I did it.

Goal: ceramic coat wheels and install Future Classic spacers.

Special Equipment: HF flat top Jack stands, HF long reach, low profile jack, BMW Jack point pucks. HF rubber wheel chocks. A hockey puck.

For good measure, I drove up on 2 boards, just to give the jack a few mm of extra clearence. It was rather stressful jacking up my new car—wondering if the laws of physics might fail and my new car might come crashing to the ground—but that didn’t happen.

I used the round, welded central jack point to jack up the front end with a standard hockey puck sandwiched between the frame and the jack, then I slid the jack stands (I only have 2) beneath the front jack supports, affixing BMW pucks into the slots, which then rested flush atop the jack stand pylon. A person could get by just doing this with a jack, but given that I was doing a ceramic coating of my wheels, a process, which would take a while, I wanted to secure the car with no worries of failure.

Once stabilized, I got to work. I had my son help me with the wheels, given that I’m 2 weeks out of a shoulder separation surgery and have been ordered not to lift anything heavier than a coffee cup. He had one small slip up and nicked the caliper a bit. I might have yelled a little, but touched it up with some “close enough” One Shot and went about my day.

The MPHAS suspension is looking nice, and likely hasn’t even settled yet, as I only have 40 miles on this thing.

It was a bit nerve wracking jacking up the rear end on that lovely, finned pumpkin cover, but the hockey puck did its job, and the blue girl went up without issue. I must say that the wheel pins made things much easier, and if you’re nervous about doing spacers yourself, don’t be. With a couple hundred dollars in specialty hardware, you’ll be set for life—changing oil, etc. I already had these things, albeit not ones, which would accommodate this car. IE, my jack was too tall, my Jack stands were the claw type, etc.

I hope this was helpful to someone.

Oh yeah, spacers were Future Classic, 12mm back, 15mm front. Installation was straight forward and seamless. The next order of business is to paint correct, then give it the full Ammo treatment with Reflex Pro II. I already hit the wheels with their Gelee product and am quite happy with the results. It's 105 in OK right now with around 85% humidity. No A/C in garage, so I have to work in shifts!

Love it. I also had my car (G42) up on jacks in my narrow one car garage for the first time ever this weekend - but only to rotate wheels. I chickened out of using front/rear jack points and got a renstand jack stand.

I will definitely be getting a wheel pins, even with light aftermarket wheels those thin lips make it easy to drop a wheel.

Ah, man, I'm jealous of those Jack stands! I too was very nervous about the whole thing, even after acquiring all the stuff—which is what led to me finding out about the specialty Jack stands that allow for Jack placement therein. Maybe one day! But I must stay, the whole car felt rock solid on each mounting point. If you keep your Jack centralized, have hefty chocks in place, and only Jack a tiny bit beyond what you need to slip the puck/stand in, everything works out perfectly. I think I'll be changing my oil this way. Afford more room than ramps, and I won't have to worry much about clearance.

Thank you, but my son is fine and well. He just dropped the wheel, which chipped my caliper paint a bit. He got mildly screamed at, then got summoned to do the next 3, all without issue. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Ahhh, I gotcha. He's a good boy. And those cast wheels are deceptively heavy!

With these modern tight clearances, it is incredibly easy to ding brake hardware when working with bolted wheels. 3 out of 4 for a newbie ain't bad.

I know what you mean, but I kinda have a panic attack whenever anyone says "you only need a jack." You know when I'm getting at, that dude who dies a painful death because his hydraulic jack has a slow leak.

I'm glad you used jack stands. Everyone always should!

Yeah, no kidding, that wheel sure gets heavy in a hurry! At least the first scratch is a memorable one. And this car will be my son's some day. When I'm long gone, maybe he'll look at that too orange touch up job and laugh!

So is there any rubbing going forward or back at full lock with the MPHAS suspension and the spacers?

I think you have Pirelli tires right?
