Considering a BMW G87 M2 as a Daily Driver:Seeking Advice
Hey everyone,
I'm an international student in the US in the market for a new car, and I've got my eye on the BMW G87 M2. I'm looking for something that can serve as a reliable daily driver, but also be fun and capable for occasional road trips. My main concerns are: • Reliability: Is the G87 M2 dependable enough for everyday use? • Maintenance Costs: Are there any common issues I should be aware of, and what are the maintenance costs like? • Comfort and Practicality: How comfortable is it for daily commutes and longer drives? Is there enough space for luggage on road trips? • Fuel Efficiency: While I don't expect it to be super economical, I'm curious about real-world fuel consumption. • Ownership Experience: Any general insights or experiences from current or past owners would be really helpful. I'd really appreciate any advice or personal experiences you can share. Thanks in advance! |

1. I've got 9k mi on mine in 7 months without any issues.
2. Regular maintenance is included for 3 years/36k mi. 3. Very comfortable with standard sport seats. My weekly "commute" consists of a 500 mi round trip (250 one way) nearly every weekend. Plenty of space for luggage if you need it. 4. I avg almost 29 mpg on my weekend 500 mi trips with the cruise control set at 84-85 mph. 5. If you have a good dealer the ownership experience is great.

Many of us daily our g87s, myself included. Coming from a modified 18 Mustang, the M2 is much more refined and comfortable for daily use, with MP HAS lowered at port installed height. As for luggage, trunk fits a couple good size bags but you can also use the back seat for luggage as you wouldn't want anyone back there for a road trip except maybe a small child? Speaking of road trips, be aware our tanks are surprisingly small so the range between fill ups isn't massive but mpg is surprisingly good. Exhaust is pretty quiet when oem, especially with valves closed, so cabin noise is of no concern.

Reliability: G8X platform has been around since 2021 and they are, so far, very reliable cars.
Maintenance Costs: Get a service pack if you can, it pays itself off by the time the major service is due. Tyres aren't the cheapest. Comfort and Practicality: This car EXCELS in roadtrips. Bootspace is plentiful, cabin space is plentiful. I'm an Aussie and have never liked big cars, if you are used to an SUV or similar, you might find it too small. • Fuel Efficiency: It's not good, even when you spend 80% of the time driving sedately. And the tank is way too small. If fuel economy is a consideration for you, it comes at the expense of fun, and this is a fun car! • Ownership Experience: Just picked mine up 2 weeks ago and came from a lightly modified F87 M2C. Honestly it's difficult to describe just how great the G87 M2 is in multiple different domains. - The cabin is a great place to be for long drives, with much less NVH than my old F87. - Power is good, but i'm still running it in, my F87 felt much more rowdy and fun but it wanted you to be into the throttle all the time. No doubt the G87 is faster but it does it in an effortless way with less sense of speed. - The steering is as numb as everyone says, I didn't think I would notice but i did immediately. Feels like it's not even connected to the wheels. - With that said, it turns in with a bizarre porsche-like rotation. Insane levels of grip. It is extremely fun to drive on a winding road. - Car is way too quiet from factory. |

Maintenance costs: As I'm sure others have mentioned, Condition Based Service (CBS) is free for the first 3 years, 30K miles. Any problems should be covered by the new car warranty: 4 years, 50K miles. I've paid for a couple of oil/filter services between CBS services. Cost of these out of pocket oil/filter services was about $190/each. Wear items can be expensive. For example the rear tires are about $580/each. (Had a slow leak in a rear tire and it was repaired. But I got a quote for a new tire.) Looks like I might get 30K miles from the rear tires. Tires are staggered: 19" front; 20" rear so I can't rotate the tires. I suspect brakes will be expensive. But I'm hoping the M2 brakes are long lived like those in my Porsche turbo -- fronts lasted 124K miles. (Rears were still good at 161K miles when I sold the car.) And not like the brakes on my Hellcat which were going to be needing renewal at 30K miles with an estimated cost of around $2K for the front brakes alone.) You didn't ask about insurance costs. You better get a high confidence quote on what insurance will cost you. I always run the VIN of the vehicle I have selected to buy past my insurance agent for a quote before I buy the vehicle just in case the insurance proves to be way high. Insurance is high but well within my budget. Comfort? Only you can make that determination. Longest trip in my M2 has been 200 miles (drive home from the dealer). Was comfortable enough. I've owned a fair number of cars and managed to be comfortable in every one. Sure in some cars it took some seat adjusting but I got it sorted. On long trips I have a couple of small pillows to use in case. I use these to prop up my arms. No road tripping experience so far in my M2 but my experience over the years with other cars I think the M2 will be ok for long trips. I mean unless you pack everything including the kitchen sink. Fuel efficiency is on you. You can drive the car in a fuel efficient manner and get better gas mileage than if you hoon around. My M2's gas mileage since factory is 20.7mpg. That's over 8300 miles and with an average speed of 29mph. ("Average" average speed for a personal passenger vehicle is about 30mph so I'm about average.) If you budget could be negatively affected by lousy fuel mileage and the resulting cost then the M2 is not for you. So far my experience with my M2 has been good. Wonderful car. Really enjoy driving it. While I don't require others to like my choice of cars my M2 has received more favorable comments -- and so far not one unfavorable comment -- than any other car I've owned. Have to say as much as I like my M2 it is not a first choice car I'd have to drive to/from college/university. I'd still own one -- as my pleasure car -- but I'd have something smaller, more economical. I've found MINIs to be a good choice. My M2 was paired with a 2023 MINI JCW but I have since traded in the JCW for a 2024 BMW 230ix. |

Re: rear tire cost mentioned above, the Michelin PS4S are $438 each, not $580. Fronts are $385.

The issue being steering on comfort , has a very lightweight feeling, so most of us are on Sport for that reason. But there are folks who swear by it & even track their cars in that setting only.

Maybe I'm just not an experienced enough high-performance driver to notice the "numbness" of the M2; however, I've owned close to 40 performance cars to-date and think the M2's steering feel is excellent. |

Former Porsche owner here as well and it steers Porshish if that makes sense but not like a 911. The M2 does have more grip than any other RWD car I have ever owned.

I own several Porsche cars. Its not a Porsche. I have just about 300 miles on my M2 and its my daily. Great car. I have no idea what numb steering means. I also have no idea why an international student (or any student) wants an M2. Save your money and study. If you have free time, don't waste it driving a fancy car, get a Nissan/Mazda, and go volunteer with some charities and learn what life is really like.
