Front camera question

So I guess we have a front camera?? I just got my 2025 last week and used the BMW navigation for the first time. It uses a front camera for "augmented view" which streams video to my driver display during turns (pic attached).

Was reading a review online and this is what it says: "Finally, the BMW Live Cockpit Professional system has been bolstered with the addition of Augmented View, which overlays directions on the images captured by the front camera. These virtual directions appear in the driver display to help with tricky navigation routes."

But I guess there's no way to activate this manually? I'd really like to be able to use this for parking. Would love to know if someone has figured this out.

Are you sure it's an actual camera or is it using street view type images? I looked through some pics people have posted here of their MY25s and I don't see where there is a front camera.

Sort of, nothing that can display on the centre screen, but there is one used by the systems for road sign recognition, lane keeping, auto high beam and basic collision recognition.

Page 18 of the 2025 BMW M2 - Navigation, Entertainment, Communication Manual (01405B45BA1) breaks down Augmented View. But, it does say over and over again depending on equipment.

Sensor yes (and possibly gps?) but not an actual camera like the rear or what comes on the cars with the 360 camera.

It is an actual camera at the top of the windshield with reasonable resolution to pick up speeds from road signs that can actually be quite a way off on a parallel road and consequently be wrongly identified as the speed limit, but yes, has no user accessible display.

Info on the KaFAS camera system (although this is an older implementation that doesn’t seem to have speed limit recognition: https://bmwtechinfo.bmwgroup.com/sib...t_info_ENG.pdf

Just being pedantic here about there being a forward facing camera, even if it isn’t useful for driver views.

Thx, that I didn't know. I figured it was GPS related...when I drive on a road with speed bumps it identifies it as uneven road as to where the speed bumps are.

Thanks for all the responses -- Looks like it is a full front camera mounted behind the rearview mirror. But this is the only "user-facing" functionality it provides. There's no way to manually trigger it for parking or even use as a dashcam (at least I wasn't able to find drive recorder among my apps, not sure if the M2 has it)

Not sure if this helps, but I wanted to add that my '23 X1 has the augmented view feature for nav and it's the same, camera is mounted in the rear view mirror housing with all the other sensors. I also have the 360 surround cameras, and the front camera for that is mounted in the grille along with the radar unit for cruise control.

Confirmed camera is in the rear view mirror housing at least if you have live cockpit pro optioned. Tried it out today.

I wonder if this is an iDrive 8.5 feature. I usually only use Waze for GPS nav but I did test iDrive nav this past Sunday to see if this would work for me and it didn't.

Just curious, why would you look down at this image on the screen vs looking at the road straight ahead?

Only thing I can think of is it will show you signs further away than what someone might be able to see?

But even then you would need to be constantly looking down and that just seems like a problem waiting to happen.

I would be more interested in if there was a way to tap into the camera and find a way to get it to record.

Reminds me of a funny story with my aunt. She was insistent on making a left turn because her GPS said so, even though we could see the restaurant was on the right.

This! I would never use this personally but it’s cool to see. I use Waze so this is pretty useless for me. But if the camera could be used as a dash cam that would be more intriguing.
