A pic of my Boxster's windshield, just before I had it replaced by a Safelite tech. Oh this back in spring of 2007.
I used Safelite because that was what a number of various dealers: Porsche, M-B, BMW, Lexus; used. In fact the cluster of car dealers down in Fremont CA used the Safelite shop in Hayward CA where I worked at the time. Oh, I was paying for this out of pocket. I forget the details now but my insurance company would only pay for OEM glass. I wanted factory glass. And as it turned out at the time -- circa 2007 -- OEM glass wasn't available. Just factory glass. Arranged to have the windshield replaced at my work. This was ok with the Safelite tech. Be sure you ask what if any thing you need to do before he visits the car. I don't recall now if I was asked to do this or not but I washed the car the day before. Next day I drove the car 30 miles to the office the morning of the windshield appointment but the car was still clean when the Safelite guy worked on the car. Left the car in his hands. Before he started we compared the new windshield with the old one. Identical. Gave him the go ahead and I went back inside. Occasionally I'd walk to the end of the hall and look out the window to watch him work. Not much to see. Think I paid around $1300 for the glass and labor. Bottom line is the job was done right. I drove that car with the new windshield from early spring of 2007 to end of 2017. No glass problems. If you take the car to a dealer they'll have their glass guy (Safelite or ?) do the work and just bill you for his cost and a mark up. Now my info is some dealers will pile on the mark up but others charge a much lower mark up. If you get quotes from various BMW dealers you'll learn which dealers charge a big markup and which dealers don't. Ask various dealers in your area who they use for glass work. Some may be forthcoming with an answer but others probably not. (That was my experience.) My local Porsche dealer used a guy who drove up from LA every week and did all the glass work at the Porsche dealer and other dealers in the area. (I had some rock chips fixed by him.) The dealers may not use Safelite but some other glass shop. Or even a guy like the local Porsche dealer used. But whomever the majority of dealers use is who you want to use. Once you have the shop lined up and the tech who does all the work on BMW and similar brands of cars he'll advise you if the window is fixable or not. Of course it is up to you. If you want to just drop the car off at a dealer and have the glass fixed or the windshield replaced, as long as you make it clear you want *factory* glass and are comfortable with the cost, go for it. |

Had glass broken on my m240 last year. Progressive wanted me to use Safelite, who I generally have a low opinion of. I insisted on receiving OE glass due to my HUD (I think there are two part numbers for the windshield for HUD and non-HUD). I got a quote from my local dealer and the prices were higher because they replace the rain sensor, as well as keep the car overnight, so they offered me a loaner.
I ended up going with safelite with OE glass because I did not feel like fighting with Progressive to authorize my local dealer doing the repair. Safelite did an awful job. I had dried black sealant pressed out beyond the A pillar covers, my dash was dirty, and the headliner near the sunroof controls seemed to be poorly attached and slightly sagging. One more reason I was glad to offload my m240 when I got the M2. I am not saying the dealer would have done a better job, but my local safelite did a terrible job.

Fwiw - Safelite came out and "repaired" the crack. The resin filled the majority of the crack but the ends are still visible. It's better than it was and they claimed the crack should't expand. If it does, the amount I paid will go toward a replacement.
