Changing individual color

Hi Everyone, I have a G87 on order and initially ordered Grigio however I changed my mind and wanted to go with Vodoo Blue after seeing one in person. For context the order was placed 1/14.

I was told by my SA that it’s no longer possible to change the color even though the car doesn’t even have a build week yet. It’s still in order received status.

The reason given was that once the special color was selected the order is locked even though the car isn’t close to being built.

Does that sound right to you guys? Any feedback is appreciated. Thank you

yep. that's right. BMW has to approve the order before dealer orders it. once in, its locked.

That is correct, and I'd be surprised they did not make that abundantly clear when you placed the order.

A bit of research on this forum would have echoed this as well.

100% true and should have been known. I was told on both my Twilight G87, and the full Individual Purple Silk M340i several years ago.

Thanks everyone appreciate the responses.

From previous experience I know the order locks once the order is accepted. In this case it’s been on order received for about a month so thought the change would be possible.

Car will great either way!

To be honest Grigio appears to be super rare, you'll have a really unique color if you can stand the wait.

From the waits we have seen so far for individual colors, you may be getting a '26 model lol.

When did they estimate you'd get the car when you placed the order?

I ordered a Grigio Tolesto back in August and was in the “order received” status until I went into production this week. I was able to switch to twilight purple late November while in the “order received” status.

This is what I was told by my SA as well. I was thinking about switching to Alpine White believe it or not but once an individual color is selected, it can’t be changed.

I was told for a regular color the build week was middle of February and late March Early April delivery.

For Individual roughly July but I assume maybe August. You maybe right on it being a 26. Who knows.

So roughly a six month wait, did you receive your production number in August or was that your initial inquiry?

Just trying to guesstimate the wait. Thanks

So I have a question about this. If for some reason it becomes a 2026 and they don’t offer individual paint in 2026…what happens then?

It’s dumb. You can’t change anything. I wasn’t told that the carbon pack wasn’t necessary anymore and could have saved $2k. But it’s all good. I’ll use the track day lol

I wanted to swap to auto but I’m ok sticking with manual.

Your advisor is 100% incorrect. As long as you aren't in 112, you can change things. That said, they'd have to request to cancel the Grigio order and then resubmit for Voodoo. And that will further delay your order.

Yeah but I wouldnt characterize canceling and starting again from scratch as a "change in color"

that's the process if you want to change the color (either another individual or back to a series color). It's the same production number. You want to switch to another individual, you must cancel and resubmit for the new color.

oh, I was under the impression you were talking about canceling and waiting for a new allocation. Being able to resubmit same production # was different than my understanding so it appears you are saying something new to me actually. thanks.

Incorrect. Individual exterior colors are locked down at 112 since the bumpers are painted separately from the rest of the vehicle. An individual interior (the M2 doesn't have that option) will lock with a block date that can occur as early as 111.

An individual exterior color request can be canceled anytime PRIOR to 112. You can also request changes to the build during this time--but the request must be made to BMW NA--your local dealer cannot make any changes in the system.

How do I know? I handle orders for a BMW dealer and have experience in this process.

Yes, I received my production number right away in August. They got me a production number right away after paying them the allocation deposit. I’m curious why I was lucky enough to switch my individual since everyone else is locked.

Once an individual order is approved by BMW AG no changes are possible. You either cancel the order and lose the allocation or stick with it.

Then things change.

You will be given the option to modify your order.

But I'm sure the question is if he can change and keep his spot.
