Nope.

Those designations should not be just about power.

No. As said above it should be a different designation altogether.
M’s are supposed to be Motorsport pedigree cars; who is racing X3/5/7s?

I agree with bringing back the “iS” moniker, for things like SUVs, and non-M-cars.

Honda kept tye Type-R badge ONLY for pure R cars. They have factory enhancements that you won’t find on an Si. Both badges are respectable and have their own lanes, and clear brand definition.

BMW is missing this, and needs to repair or revive it.

Well, they missed it with the last pure ICE M experience.
Now, I can care less if the hybrids or electric M or M375i or whatever gets 18 ///M badges all over it.

And as shown above - it works. People really believe that they have an “M-lite” car without ever driving and experiencing the real M car.
I went from e92 335is to f80 335i to F80 M3 and have driven the base loaner 328/330, no ZSP cars. The step to an M is tremendous in many ways, and MUCH more dramatic from a 335/340 than from 330 to 340.

But the marketing works for them and they won’t back off from that.

Agreed. That’s what it is today, no argument there.

What it should be - that’s another story for another bottle of bourbon.

I am and will always be a Honda guy; love the engines and company story, but always said that I would move to BMW when I could, for many of the same reasons.
30 years later - here I am.

I would just love to see BMW put some more exclusivity around the M badge; it already has the price premium. Just missing the exclusivity it used to have.

PS - I labor under know delusions of possible change, I just wish it would.
