all the weight savings is in the glass and motor of the sunroof. It is a thin layer of aluminum vs a layer of CF. Very little weight savings comes from that.

G87s for U.S. market are unavailable with a steel roof. The Sunroof is Std Eq.
That makes more sense. So other markets getting a no-sunroof option?

Correct. Certain markets will get the steel roof. It will not be happening for the U.S. market. Sunroof or CF Roof only.

I see. No complaints from me in the US! I do think the sunroof is worth the extra 48lbs just to brighten up the cabin. It also lets more exhaust noise in when you have it ajar.

I hope the majority of US sales are with the sunroof so that they rethink this and make the steel roof standard and charge for the sunroof. That way I won't need to get the CF roof. Wishful thinking, I know.

I'd trade in my M240i xDrive for an M2 xDrive, until then, I'll keep the G42.

The CF roof has the all important bling factor. It matters not to me, but it is vital to some buyers. The subtle lower center of gravity is the attraction for myself.

You might be waiting indefinitely.

Given how many complained/lobbied for a sunroof in the OG F87 it is definitely wishful thinking for the U.S. market. It is also a very wise marketing plan to push the CF roof.

Looking forward to driving one. Seems it'll take a while though, these are just trickling into dealers and seem marked up.

And....lowering the center of gravity in an important way.

Swap out for a lithium battery (-38 lbs) and forged wheels (-16 lbs) and that's 102 lbs of total weight savings over a stock car with a sunroof.

That will be a noticeable difference!

You’ll be saving alot more than -16lbs going forged. The cast wheels will be anywhere from 29-35lbs per wheel.

A good set of forged OEM or aftermarket your looking at 22-25lbs each.

So a total savings of 30-40lbs give or take.
That’s HUGE honestly , especially considering it’s unsprung weight.

I’d expect a noticeable handling improvement as well.

I hope your weight estimates are true but I'm not putting it past BMW to have these wheels weigh in around 29-30each. Hopefully we'll find out next week. If not I'll post here on 4/8.

Could very well be , hence my delta of 29-35

That still puts you at -30lbs roughly when going forged . This platform has massive potential

Probably ought to target the front of the car first with that 52/48 ratio

I was thinking that, but figured I should start with the low hanging fruit. And the 30 lbs I will lose off my my mid section will be coming from the center-ish of the car. I can't complain about car being a porker if I'm just throwing an extra 30 lbs of my belly in there.

Haha if you have it to lose that'll be easy. I can't take anything off my midsection. The important thing for me is understanding the weight on each wheel and then start finding low hanging fruit to balance it all out.

Yeah,in efficient it sounds like the new civic type r,which is very tame.Sport and sport plus sound about the same and are marginally better.Definitely isn’t at all close to how good the original M2 exhaust sound is.

I started off thinking I could buy this as a 2nd car but I just can’t. The giant iPad screen is absolutely absurd—against all my values in motoring!

I wear a manual wind watch, drive only stick shifts, use a film camera from 1976, and listen to vinyl records—-owning a car with a giant electronic dashboard is like sending Dracula into a nightclub dressed in skinny jeans and golden glitter—twerking.

*crosses G87 off list of 2nd cars*

Hope all of you who do buy this car enjoy it though! ⚡️

You are not alone. I really disliked the "tablet" in the middle trend and yet it gets worse with the free-standing screens. As we have seen a short while ago, BMW geniuses are trying now to use the whole bottom of the windshield as a screen.

I’m not 80 like you but I didn’t like it when I got the i4 but you get used to it like anything else. You don’t have many options left for new BMWs, better move fast.
