on the fence of the styling, I saw car in person and its nice but a little bland relative to the out going model

lack of rear seat space - kids are small right now but coming from an X3 m40i its a lot less.

High MSRP $68,500 + tax could get a new X5 for this type of money.

not great for road trips, but use the XC90 for those anyway.

The real question is, would I be happier in a new X5 rather than an M2. Such a different experience and feel. I do not track cars, it would be a garage queen.
It seems you would regret buying it. It seems you know it too, just looking for help confirming. It really sounds to me that it's not what you're looking for.

If you really regret it later, pick one up with low miles at a discount. Eventually the market will soften as production ramps up.

Yeah, I don't have the garage space, or time to constantly detail the car, or the type of environment where I can even drive the damn thing. I'm surrounded by shitty traffic.

Also, my daily is due for replacement, so I'd rather just upgrade that, pocket the difference, and buy a house next year with at least three garage spaces enclosed and climate controlled Then I can buy another toy.

Trust me this whole thing is really irritating, emotional, and time-consuming; but you live and learn

I loved it while I had it (except for the brake dust). If I can tell anyone on this site one thing they need to do immediately: REPLACE THE BRAKE PADS ASAP.

They work amazingly well, but I put the pad dust as 2nd on my list of things I'd never like to deal with again: one step ahead of taking a line drive to the nut sack.

The M2 and the X5 are completely different lifestyle cars. Nobody on here can decide for you. You already have two high end SUVs. Are you getting rid of the X3 to get the M2?

Was considering it, but its a great car that I would miss. I'm leaning heavily towards letting the M2 go.

I can't agree more on this. I literally can't drive it for 20-30 minutes without the wheels turning the brown/pinkish color full of brake dust. It's THAT bad where I'm wiping the wheels every time I drive it. I worry about the wheels being covered by the time I get to a cars & coffee meet. New pads + Ceramic coating on the wheels do help but it will still generate some so I also bought a new wheel cleaner brush. The stock rims are also not the easiest to clean, but look great when they are clean.

This question alone makes it crystal clear that you shouldn't be buying another new car, whether M2 or anything else. If you aren't already in financial ruin, dopey decisions like this will soon send you there.

From what you’ve said on this thread, it sounds like you’d be better off letting the M2 go. If you have a good relationship with your dealer or if the next person in line wants your specifications, then you might be able to get the deposit back. You might also be able to find someone on this forum to work with in terms of them buying the car and you recovering the deposit from the new buyer. Best of luck.

Exactly. I was actually stressing if I could make it to C&C with clean wheels. #priorities

Were all these things not a factor in your decision to buy the car in the first place?

Let the M2 go. You'll have several production years ahead to revisit your decision, and used cars to test drive will appear in the meantime.

Which dealership are you working with?

You said your (or not) car is build. Has it made it on a vessel yet?

Can you share your Center? There are tons of folks still waiting for an allocation, you’ll make someone quite happy when you quit the waffling and dump it.

That will be wayyy cheaper than buying/leasing and then trying to dump.
I don't know if this applies.

Let's consider a fully loaded M2. A small number of allocated units, numbering in the low hundreds, are set to arrive shortly. Additionally, a smaller quantity, due to production delays related to XYZ, is expected for the #2's.

Availability will be extremely limited, primarily outside of the mostly* base HEA cars. Lists for this it seem to be as long as 20 deep & even a quick search, the HEAs currently in stock are only 32 nationwide. That doesn't consider factors like adj markup, packages, etc.

IMO this is a recipe for a highly sought-after car.

Only way to address this with BMW is if you get a large amount of customer complaints to their service department about this. If they receive enough complaints, they will issue a SIB on it and replace it with different pads. That won't happen overnight, it'll be a long drawn out process that could take months or longer and only if they get a large amount of complaints. Your only other options are to live with it or get them replaced out of your pocket.

Wonder if this has come up on the G80 forum and if people have been complaining to BMW about this?

It has. The brake dust is a known issue on the G8x platform. On YouTube you have to watch owner reviews sometimes to suss these details out yourself. It's bad across the board.

I provided feedback to my dealer on this issue.

Wow, I don't like brake dust either, but for me, there are a lot more steps between cleaning and junk trauma.

Out of curiosity, did the G8x forums reach consensus on best aftermarket replacements? Something all seasons? (I'm not going to run ceramics in Boston.)

What I can tell you is circumstantial: if you grab the car at sticker price or really close to it, and you don't sacrifice convenience in the event you sell shortly afterward, not only will you not lose money, you'll likely make a few bucks.

My dealer/CA is pissed at me for the price I sold it for. I will not disclose it as that is private. YMMV.
Tell op privately, it’s exactly what he’s asking without asking.

I think it was EBC Red Stuff. Not sure I read those threads months ago when I was exploring M3 options.

Guess not enough people are complaining since those cars have been in production for over 2.5yrs.

In other news, Armor All Brake Dust Repellant works pretty well at keeping the wheels somewhat decent for a couple of weeks, and marginal for a month.

I'm liking the M2, but what kind of financial loss am I looking at if I buy the car and do not want it after a few weeks or months?
I had to sell a car only 6 weeks after purchase 10 years ago. I got a good deal on the initial purchase, but it was still a significant loss when I sold it. Even for a car as desirable as the new M2, you can expect to lose the sale tax and something like 5-10% of the purchase price. Best case is making a private sale, but handling the transaction and dealing with potential customers is a real PIA. Bring a Trailer hasn't sold a single G87 yet, so it would likely get a fair bit of interest and could sell well. The fees are quite low on BaT.

The better move is to ensure that it is the right purchase in the first place. Does the M2 have a specific mission or use case? I find that defining that really helps to decide if the purchase will bring real value to your QOL. Is the car a pure weekend thrill machine? Do you already take weekend drives or do you need to build in the time and find the routes? Is there a specific feature that convinced you to order (manual transmission)?

Its easy to get restless and just want something new. I use Turo when those urges hit and rent something interesting. To date, that weekend is enough to scratch the itch and realize that I don't need something new. Though I should mention that Turo can backfire - a friend rented a 992 911 and is now scouring the earth to get an allocation. He appropriately blames me for his new obsession. :P

My M2 is now "Ready for Transport" and I have felt some apprehension too, though it is passing. My car is to be a daily replacing a 2016 340i 6-sp manual, which is pretty easy to justify imho.

Best,

Nick
