No idea what you can expect from AA downpipe but my 2023 M240i X-drive has a used JB+ fitted and set at 3 PM position ( £25 from Ebay)

Running 99 octane GB petrol I have logged before and after acceleration with a Dragy.

0-60....down from 3.9 to 3.5 (3.34 with rollout, but that is cheating)
30-70 in 4th down from 5.4 to 4.6
30-70 in 5th down from 7.4 to 6.6.

Just spoke to a shop about installing my AA catted downpipe on my 2023 M240i Xdrive and he said the front axle needs to be dropped. Is this not an easy install like I've seen on YouTube

The dp was a pia and it is a two men job. I did it with my buddy and it took us half day and a good sweat lol. Recommend to find a shop.

There's no synergy in doing dp and intake together. I'd just put in the dp and start enjoying.

The shop is either mistaking your vehicle for some other AWD vehicle , or they are trying to charge you a shit-ton for the install.

There are at least a dozen 2022 and newer m240 / m340 downpipe install videos available online . It is a simple install

That shop has no idea what they are talking about. No axle needs to be dropped. Definitely don’t go to them.

The install is easy, even on jack stands, which is how I installed it. Took me about 1.5 hours taking my time.

“Hardest” part is slipping the downpipe into stock exhaust. To make it simple just get a $20 exhaust pipe expander to open the stock pipe just a tiny bit and then the downpipe will fit in just fine.

Your shop is making it sound a lot more complicated then it should be to charge you more. It's a common tactic these days with lots of shops.

I recommend you go to a more honest or knowledgeable shop.

Do you have a link to the expander you used ? Do you only put the expander in just far enough to expand just the beginning edge of the pipe?

I went to the local harbor freight and bought this: https://www.harborfreight.com/exhaus...rge-59698.html

Yeah maybe an inch or so. Also don’t go crazy expanding the pipe. It just needs a very little bit. I expanded the pipe just enough that there was still some friction between the pipes.

Prior to using the pipe expander there was no way the downpipe was fitting. Even when using a rubber mallet it went no where.

That's weird, because out of the dozen or so install videos I've watched , no one seemed to have an issue with the exhaust side of the downpipe sliding into the exhaust midpipe. It seems like the hardest part is wiggling everything enough to get the factory downpipe to come off.

Just goes to show - sometimes your install won't go exactly like other peoples install .

I wonder if some lube or a bit of grease would have helped .... I'm sure you tried that though

Actually quite a few people run into the difficulty of getting the dp into the mid pipe and have to use a pipe expander.

Getting the stock downpipe out takes a few whacks with a rubber mallet.

I did use some of that silver exhaust grease but it just wasn’t cutting it on its own. Needed the pipe expander.

Most install videos I feel don’t want to say what difficulties they ran into just to seem like they are a great mechanic. Hell, people in this thread have even said their shops had some difficulties with the mid pipe part of the install.

Nothing about the install is hard. Just be prepared for stuff like this as it can make the install so much easier.

Great advice , thank you .

It sounds like it might be worth it to spend the $30 on the pipe expander so you have it on hand in case you are one of the people who run into this issue.

Nothing worse than having to go out to buy more tools in the middle of an install because you're having an issue.
