Maybe just sign up for it and use it for 6 months or so... I'd say that if someone did steal your information, they'll want to use it soon to maximize any kind of damages that they can do.

My dad uses lifelock and likes it. I personally can't vouch for it as I don't have any personal experience with it. Here is a link to the article about the CEOs ID being stolen 13 times. The article basically goes on to tell that him plastering his SSN all over the place taunted the hackers into doing it. The FTC then fined them and basically called it a scam. *shrug* Calling it a scam and it being a scam are obviously different things.
I tried to look for the monthly or annual fee on freecreditreport but can't find it. How much does it cost a month for that service?

Lifelock charges $110 a year for basic or $165 for command center.

Lifelock is a scam. US Gov't has fined them millions.

Nothing fishy at all. Can I only check through annualcreditreport.com once a year for free? Or is it free everytime?
I'm not sure, but I'm leaning toward 1 free a year. BTW, that site is run by the gov and isn't private like freecreditreport.com and the like.

I'd do the fraud alert just in case, for peace of mind.

I think it's like $13/month? The warning emails are real time though. I bought a car during the time I had a membership and about 20 minutes after turning in a credit app I had an email from them telling me that there was a credit check.

What about the credit monitoring banks offer?

Like this one.

http://www.identitymonitor.citi.com/

They keep pushing me to open it when I opened a credit card with them.
