The 1-child policy is too totalitarian. How about this for an alternative: instead of getting a tax break for having kids, you get a tax hike. After all, more kids are going to require more public resources, such as schools, law enforcement, road-miles, etc., so they should pay for it. Maybe the first kid is "included", in your normal taxes, the 2nd one is amount X, the third is 3X, the fourth 9X, etc. You continue to pay the tax until the kid is 18. Even if you don't give a hike, at least don't offer a deduction.

I think this problem is actually pretty limited these days in 1st world countries though. In the US, the only reason our population is growing is due to immigration. In much of Europe they have negative growth, so such a situation isn't very necessary.

The reason is because in 3rd world countries, children are an asset. They're your retirement plan...your farm hands...maybe even your entertainment. It's also likely you'll outlive them, so you need to have backups for when some of them die.

In 1st world nations kids are liabilities. They're your medical bills, the one you entertain...the one you drive around...the one you work for...the one you pay to educate. It's highly unlikely your kids will die before you. This naturally encourages people to have fewer children.

I had a great aunt that had 16 kids. The older ones took care of the younger ones. Whats funny is that most of my cousins decided on not having children and the one that did (very few) only had 1 or 2.

yeah they are from all the stupid people who watch their show on TLC, they are probably making millions from the TV show let alone what he bilks out of his parishioners each week at church.

I once had a guy working for me who had 10 kids, nicest kids you would every want to meet. But the guy though it was his mission to have lots of kids and to tell every person he knew if they did not have lots of kids they were wrong. He use to preach to me about how I was a horrible husband and fail my wife since we did not have kids and I even allowed her to work. Personally I did not care since I would say things to him to fuck with his head, he would leave my office trying to figure out what I meant.

Well he started to harass others at work, and we had to let him go. It was kind of reverse religious discrimination. If you did not believe in his religious values he would just harass you all the time.

I respect anyone's decision to have any amount of children they want, but to have so many children that you can't be a parent to all of them (and have to have your older children help raise the younger ones), kind of irks me.
