Tires and brakes are the #1 and#2 things that you can do to improve your track times. Once you use a 200TW or 100TW track-oriented tire you will see the difference and you will want to have a track set and a daily driving set. Soon you will be at the point where you drive to the track on your daily wheels and tires and change to your track tires at the track
Here is my advice- Pick your tires first and then pick your wheels. There are more tire options with 19" but an 18" combo is a few pounds lighter as GT3M2 and I verified. A staggered setup will have a more stock look and drive (if you can really tell the difference). A square setup allows you to rotate your tires after each track day and will likely result in getting 3-4 additional track days out of a set of tires. I am fitting 295's with no spacer and no rubbing and I am slightly lowered. 305's are absolutely doable.
Apex is the way to go. They do a lot of work to verify fitment and the extra work on the lip and warranty set them apart from other wheel manufacturers.
I will hopefully be at ECR with Driver's Edge on Oct 7th and COTA with Edge Addicts on Nov 18th if you want to see my setup.

Thanks for that information.

I am actually a member at ECR so we should definitely get together sometime, I think I am allowed to bring a guest.

Thinking about going 19's with a staggered setup but I figured with 18's I will have better tire options that are more cost effective. I have driven GT3's and other cars on track, but when I drove the G87 for the first time at ECR a few months ago, fell in love. a few seconds less on the track than my 992 GT3 but arguably more fun, just needed better brakes (for conversation purposes, I did 52 laps so by the end of it the rotors, brake pages, and fluid were toast) along with tires.

Trying to keep this as a balance between a fun daily when needed and a track monster.

Apex is defiantly the wheels I want to go with along with the AP Racing kit, but waiting for rears to be finished.

gotcha, We definitely needed the 5mms with the 305s we tested, but good to know that clearance is significantly improved with the 295s to that degree. It's probably still good to have the 5mms on hand in case you switch to wider tires or run suspension that limits clearance in the future.

18s are definitely lighter and the tires themselves are cheaper, but from what I've seen, it can be harder to find the wider 18" sizes you'll need in compounds you want. The 19s are more expensive, but often have better tire choices that are more easily available. 18" availability is quite good in narrower sizes like 275/35-18, but not as good when you go wide.

We also have more options in the 19s for staggered et c. 18s just have the square 10.5s for now.

--

A broader question for the group since we have some track guys in here, are there solid camber plates available for these cars that people have tested yet? I know Vorshlag has a G80 option, but curious to hear if anyone has a set of standalone plates in mind at the moment.

I probably will be doing the millway ones after this weekend.

ZPD has some on his car not sure what brand.

Current options are turner, vorshlag, millway, afaik.

I think most people will go millway due to nvh concerns.

I kept the spacers on car for that reason but if I get through track weekend with 0 rub I will try them on lift to see.

Gotcha, thanks for the feedback. I'm curious to see what camber you can get out of the Millway plates alone. Not that you'll need/want to max it out.

They may clear on the lift without spacers but rub the strut slightly on track when the tire deflects. I'd shoot for a 2-4mm minimum gap when testing if the tightest clearance is strut to tire.

I haven't seen a G87 on black wheels yet. Our sample sets are Anthracite and Brushed Clear. The same fitments are found on the g80 if you want to see the profile of the matching wheels:

Yes, I have the Millway Track versions. No complaints so far. I would estimate that I can max it out at -3.5* of camber but I could be off there.

Wow that looks great, is there a spec of these apex wheels that will fit the original g87 oem tire set up?

There are a few, but I generally recommend our 19x10 ET12 front and 20x11 ET18 rear wheels for that purpose.

This gives you a half-inch of additional wheel width both front and rear, lighter wheels with forged construction, and the option to go to wider tires once the OE tires wear out.

Sorry to keep linking G80s, but this car is running the same tire setup you're considering: the stock tires on the wheels I mentioned above: https://apexwheels.com/gallery/bmw/m...nthracite-1511

Those are 275/35-19 front, 285/30-20 Michelin * spec tires. Despite the slight stretch in the rear, I think the tires suit the wheels quite well.

This is making my choice of 826m vs apex hard. Do the stock bmw center caps fit your wheels?

Yes, they do:

They come with our black caps, but you can order OE BMW caps from us or use caps from your OE wheels or the dealer in our wheels.

It can rub depending on the specific tire. It's mainly going to be when you have full lock dialed in during a 3 point turn in parking lots if it does happen. This was a bigger issue on the G80, but the M2 fender liner vents are a bit more generous and less likely to catch the tires at full lock. I don't have a full list of which specific tire models do and don't rub but it can potentially happen.

It's not just the increase in width of the tire, it's also the increase in wheel width and reduction in offset that play a role in that rubbing. The good thing is that during most driving conditions on the street, you won't have that much steering angle applied and it will not rub at high speeds.

The front should be pretty close as is but the rear would likely need 10mm-12mm with them only being +18.

In my opinion, the rear 20x11 et18 is fairly flush as is. Here are some examples of cars on stock suspension with that wheel in the rear and the 19x10 ET12 up front:

Im going for an OE+ setup without affecting the cars stock geometry too much so I’m concerned that 19x10 with ET12 is a bit too much in the front. 15mm positive scrub + the tyres rubbing on full lock are making me reconsider.

ET15-17 with 19x10 would have been perfect.

Thoughts?

I just put 15mm spacers on front and 12mm on rear with stock wheels and there is no rubbing. Also lowered 30mm with H&R VTF.
