Right. But the assumption that has been made is that all Mexico produced cars have VINs that start with 3MW.
That's the problem with assumptions.

Just got back from the dealership and 3 different people told me my 230i is being made in Germany.

I am beginning to think that everyone at this dealership believes that all BMW cars are made in Germany and all SUVs are made in South Carolina.

Would have thought someone at the dealership would have read the BMW press release

Also, as to why a car built in Mexico should have a 3MW WMI but will have a European WMI when sold in Europe...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vehicl...ication_number

"In practice, each is assigned to a country of manufacture, although in Europe the country where the continental headquarters is located can assign the WMI to all vehicles produced in that region (Example: Opel/Vauxhall cars whether produced in Germany, Spain, the United Kingdom or Poland carry a WMI of W0L because Adam Opel AG is based in Rüsselsheim, Germany)."

Only a guess but probably to avoid import tariffs? Hecho en Mexico but still a European car/product?

No way BMW is going to play with a VIN to avoid an import tariff.

The AutoID guy that owns that car is on here, he replied to one of my posts the other day. Maybe he knows the answer??

It's still early but I concur -- my '22 Thundernight 230i has been flawless. Am embarrassed that for years previously I bought in to the "don't buy a car built in Mexico" baloney.

Had a German built m240i

I owned a 240i convertible made in Germany. I sold it knowing I wouldn’t get another one built there. When I decided I wanted another 240i no(convertible) but wondered about the built in Mexico thing. I watched some you tube videos of the factory and I decided it is a BMW factory. With People trained to do a job with a BMW uniform on. I don’t see a big deal that’s where the factory is. My family and friends work in auto supplier industry and they all have factories in Mexico building parts for cars all over the world. So I am getting my 2023 BMW built in Mexico next month. Will report if it’s substandard to the German built.

I can confirm my Mexico-built G42 has an above standard BMW build quality.
