Not that weird really.

1) for the looks (thicc rears look nice from the back, low profile 20' wheel look nice from the side)
2) traction advantage for the 0-60 crowd
3) every carmaker wants their cars to understeer when stock because casual drivers can't handle snap oversteer

Yes they did..

I called them out in an email and well heres a quote. It was lame to do and they know it... really sad just like scummy car dealers and "inflation" lol funny how the only parts of their catalog that were effected are their most popular ones for newer cars.. but i digress other wheels took a small cut prior.. so its CAPITALISM BABY.

"Thank you for reaching out, we're happy to address your concerns. We did implement a price change to our forged wheels on November 10th. As a BMW M2 owner, we completely understand the optics from your perspective (price increases are never fun) and we want to shed light on the bigger picture.

"As economic conditions continue to inflate, pricing is often forced to go with it. However, only a fraction of our wheel catalog was affected by recent pricing changes, in fact more markets experienced a price reduction than a price increase which means that many enthusiasts will actually benefit from the changes made. Additionally, pricing on approximately 40% of our forged catalog stayed exactly the same. There are many contributing factors that go into these decisions, but I can say with confidence that our Production and Engineering teams work very hard to find efficiencies that maintain our quality standards and pursuit of true performance, and that has really helped offset rising costs within the industry."

I wish they had given notice before hand. Its not like they haven’t known for sometime they needed to increase prices.
Before it was an easy choice. Now I need to take a second look at other wheels.

Yes, we did raise prices as the quote from bearded mentions. Our full email response that John sent you touched on some additional notes: that missing text is here with some additions for clarity:

We don’t manipulate our wheel pricing based on short-term sales or promotions, and the extremely stable pricing that our customers have enjoyed over the last 16 years is a testament to that. Just as we perform deep analysis within our wheel development program to optimize our products, we put the same amount of energy into analyzing development and production/manufacturing costs etc. to ensure the business stays healthy (even if that means price reductions). We’re absorbing this information in real time, and implementing changes with a long term plan/strategy in mind.
Black Friday represents a small period in time - a small fraction of the year. We’ve got some meaningful discounts queued up for the upcoming sale which will result in significant savings for our customers to enjoy - even in the few markets where a price increase was implemented like this one.

As a sponsor here, and on many other enthusiast forums, our objective is to be a contributing member to the community. We are not out to make a quick buck.

-

As the primary BMW Fitment Expert here at Apex, I’ve been lucky to be able to be a part of the many BMW communities that we serve. Our goal as a company has always been to engage with the enthusiasts that enjoy our wheels, as we are enthusiasts ourselves.

Products getting more expensive sucks, but I can assure everyone that this wasn’t a knee-jerk reaction to upcoming Black Friday sale in order to capture more revenue temporarily while a discount is in place. That is not our goal, nor is it the motivation behind this change, and that is not how we do things. These price increases have been in discussion for months. There’s a lot that goes into decisions like these and we don’t take them lightly. Do we wish the changes could have been made at a different time? Absolutely, but in the end making the change two months ago vs now would make no difference as to what the Black Friday sale would look like.

5x112 fitments both for this M2 and the other g-chassis cars aren’t like older BMW wheels where many of the existing fitments we already have on the shelf can work on multiple generations of cars with minimal development and engineering cost and no in person scanning and test fitments needed. We’re working to develop all new products (Flow Formed G87 fitments), new sizes, and new features for these cars, in addition to new guides, technical articles and other resources. Those developments all increase the costs within a market, and are something that has to be considered if the community wants companies like Apex to be around for the long haul.

It would be easy for us to remain static, cranking out identical product without giving any value to the communities that we work with, but that’s not how we operate. We are actively working to give BMW enthusiasts and every other market we serve new features and products that they want at prices that are fair.

I know how excited you were about those wheels Bearded-Driver, I worked with you on the fitment notes via your earlier ticket. I’m sure many others share your excitement, and we still feel that our wheels offer one of the best value propositions in the industry. Hopefully, the community that we’ve engaged with can appreciate the work that goes in to every fitment that we make, and that keeping the business healthy (even if that means rare instances of price increases) will benefit the community long term.

I hope this helps provide more context. We’ll have Black Friday details for you Monday, but for those of you who like to jump the start: https://apexwheels.com/blackfriday

None yet, The SM-10s are only a winter fitment (for now) for the M2 and I haven't seen anyone running them yet. We'll have more flow formed options for this chassis next year.

Why not, that's what I'm doing. Going to use the * Spec tires, they're absolutely great. They're totally fine on a 11 inch wide wheel and when i'm done using them in like 5 years, i'll get a wider tire. I say go for it.

You can definitely run the 285/30-20s on our 20x11s. There is a bit of stretch, but its not bad enough to cause any safety issues. Heres a G80 with that exact setup:

No plans for it currently, no. We did produce the SM-10RS in G8X fitments for the first time and those wheels are now on sale, but during the survey we ran several months ago, the SM-10RS beat out the EC-7RS for the additional Forged Sprint Line design that M owners wanted.

It'll likely clear the front strut with no problems. The rear of the car will have tons of room.

The only thing to note is the tight inner clearance between the front tires and fender liners with the 285/35-19 tires. You may get some liner rubbing around the radiator vents in parking lots at full steering lock. I haven't seen this on an M2 yet, but it was close in our testing with Michelins.

Could I run slightly narrower tires ok, 275/285? I don’t see the need to jump up too much in size unless the wheel width demands it.

Yes, easily doable. Similar to the double staggered fitment I mentioned above actually, just with a 19" rear wheel.
