It’s subjective. Some cameras are good, others not so. It bothers some more than others. My driveway is dark and I’ve never had a problem with the camera. Then again I never rely on them.

Typically the tail light when moving in reverse should provide sufficient lighting for the rear view camera. This worked well on the F22. Indeed, on the G42 there is insufficient light and you manoever in the dark…

The revering light indicates the direction the vehicle is travelling to other road users. It is not designed to light a path for the direction of travel.

It’s the quality (or lack of) of night time camera performance that lacks hence why other manufacturers are sometimes better.

Yeah it’s just a design flaw that everyone has to live with. Maybe you can replace the LED bulbs with brighter variants?

I actually think that if you could fit a brighter LED bulb into the reverse light fixtures, you might get a noticeable improvement.

I did that on a MKVII GTI and while the reverse camera was OK in the dark with the OEM bulbs, the A/M LED bulbs made a huge difference.

I somehow doubt that. In the mean time try using your mirrors rather than just the camera for reversing.

Sounds like you have phone issues. My android auto works fine, never had any issues with my reverse camera. BTW incase you forgot. https://g87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=2053133

Not only is it false that backup lights are not intended to light a path for travel, I can quote you the federal statute that indicates that:

https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/...sec571-108.xml

S2.Purpose. The purpose of this standard is to reduce traffic accidents and deaths and injuries resulting from traffic accidents, by providing adequate illumination of the roadway, and by enhancing the conspicuity of motor vehicles on the public roads so that their presence is perceived and their signals understood, both in daylight and in darkness or other conditions of reduced visibility.

S2 refers to headlamps, not back up lamps.

Did the same on my GTI. Big improvement.

Those taillight housing are pretty “low tech” and designed for incandescent bulbs and being able to replace them individually, as I’m sure you are well aware.

Haven’t looked at these housings but I assume it’s just 1 sealed unit?

I just noticed how small the reverse light is in the housing.
I'll have to check access and if possible see what the OEM bulb/LED looks like.

I had searched forums for other newer models (G20 and the like) to see if
anyone had done a bulb switch, but couldn't find anything.
