Creaking noise in drive shaft
Hey guys! New to the forum, first BMW ever, came from a civic si!
So the g42 in thunder night metallic is such a pleasure to drive, only problem I have right now is this annoying creaking sound when driving at low speeds and accelerating softly and also occurs when shifting from reverse to drive, vice versa at a standstill. Please see attached photos and video clip. Sound clip |

This is the G87/M2 forum. There is a separate forum for G42/M240. With that said, I have a 23 M240 and have no creaking as you described. |

Thanks man. Can a mod please move this to the correct forum please? Sorry.
So you’ve never heard anything like that shifting from drive to reverse? I wonder if it’s missing some grease… |

hey! my 240 was also making a noise at low speeds. it wasnt a creaking, but more of a thumping. as time went on, the noise was happening more frequently and at higher speeds (never happened over 35-40MPH)
check out this service bulletin: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/20...35180-9999.pdf we ended up scheduling a service appointment and showed the SA this. they did end up replacing both tie rods and the noise is completely gone. |

Took it into the dealer today and they said it was normal operation from the transfer of torque from the transmission to the drive train. They will reach out to the regional manager. Will keep you guys posted

Note: Mods deleted the full SIB, looks like BMW had them take it down. Here's what the SIB had outlined in it. SITUATION When turning the steering wheel while stationary or when driving on uneven roads; cracking, creaking, or knocking noises may be heard. CAUSE The breakaway torque in the thrust bearing of the tie rod is too high. CORRECTION Replace one or both tie rod assemblies. |

I appreciate the reply! But I think the issue isn’t tie rod related as the noise specifically comes from the rear diff area.. we’ll see what BMNA regional tech has to say once the dealer gets back to me |

According to my dealer, the regional technician said it’s a normal sound occurring when loading and unloading the drive train. They said it’ll remain an open ticket and that they will wait for another m240 to come in to try and reproduce the sound.

my M2 does this since I collected it, its not super loud inside but i hear it everytime i touch throttle at lower speed, it doesnt do it when changing from reverse to drive or vice versa, only when loading the drive train/diff. I will get it checked or confirmed normal at break.in service.
I started hearing some odd sounds on the M2 lol, never had them in other cars, seems like the more expensive the car is, the worse sounds it does... occasionally my rurbo does a whine after it winds down, my powersteering whines slightly when turning faster, etc. |

Hello! Has your issue been resolved?
I have a 540i xDrive built in March 2023 that has the identical noise. In China the media has recently exposed that most of 5 series and 3 series built between Feb to Sept 2023 have the same draveshaft issue. but 2 series was not mentioned. |

Hey man. Not sure if you're still having this noise but all I cant tell you is i had the same noise when I bought the car new. Happense when in parked shifting from R-D or D-R. Took it to the dealer and they said it was part of the exhaust that was making the noise. They ordered the parts but it took a few months and during that time I kept driving with the noise. It started going away and eventually the noise disappeared by itself before the dealer even replaced my exhaust. Then two months later dealer called me so I still decided to replace the part although i hadnt been hearing that noise for a while. After the replacement the noise came back again lol so I guess it was due to new parts needing some sort of break in and the noise went away again by itself after few hundred kms of driving. That was my story, hope it helps.
