APEX | G87 M2 Wheel & Tire Technical Thread.
Our M2 test fit is complete and our wheels are ready for your M2. Many of you have been reaching out inquiring about wheels for the new G87 M2. While we knew the M2 shared the factory wheel and tire fitments with the G8X M3 and M4, a test fitment and scan was needed prior to fully committing to selling our existing wheel fitments optimized around the M3 and M4 initially. Our time spent around the prior generation F87 M2s and F8X M3s and M4s made us cautious when approaching the new cars, but luckily in this case the fitment was more forgiving. Our G8X M3 and M4 fitments will be a direct carryover to the M2 with similar fitment notes in most cases. Be sure to review our fitment guide if you’d like to review the options on offer. Our forged Sprint Lines were the perfect place to start when choosing a design for the new M3 and M4. As the lightest wheels we’ve ever made, the Sprint Line embodies not just a focus on reduced weight but also increased strength in critical areas of the wheels often overlooked by other wheel manufacturers. Ultimately we selected the VS-5RS for its low weight and aggressive modern aesthetic. Meet the VS-5RS As part of our forged Sprint line, the VS-5RS was built to be extremely light while still offering a meaningful strength increase over our flow-formed wheels. Engineered for drivers looking to shed as much weight as possible to improve lap times. The low factory offsets and generous dimensions of the factory fenders gave us the unique opportunity to offer more concave wheel fitments for the G8x M3 and M4 and now the G87 M2. Previous BMW APEX wheel designs were limited to profile 3 levels of concavity across most of the range but our all new Motorsport Blanks allowed us to produce deeply concave wheels specifically suited to the brake clearance requirements and low offsets of this new chassis. This additional concavity lets us bring weight down while maintaining strength and also contributes to the gorgeous aesthetic. The Details APEX as a brand has always focused on motorsport and track day fitments. While many of our wheels are run on the street, we always strive to first serve customers that push their cars on track even with newer cars that are more likely to be dual-duty platforms or only see occasional track use. This has naturally led us to focus on smaller-diameter wheels which have inherent rotational mass and tire cost advantages. 18x10.5 ET18 square x 305/35-18 Nitto NT01 tires Our initial test fitment included our set of 18x10.5 ET18 wheels with 305/35-18 tires originally designed for the M3 and M4. While a technical article walking through that fitment will be coming soon, we have a number of fitments in 18”, 19” and 20” diameters to suit the unique goals of G87 M2 owners. Looking beyond the VS-5RS into the future, we plan to launch new forged and flow formed offerings in G8X fitments in the future. Our 19x9.5 ET25 SM-10 Flow Formed and Forged SM-10RS Forged wheels are already available for the G87 for those looking for a square winter fitment. All new forged SM-10RS fitments are in the works for the future as well based on the results from our previous community survey. Brake Clearances With spoke profiles optimized around the CCB and Steel OE brakes on the M3 and M4, our VS-5RS wheels clear all of the OE M2 brakes in our recommended fitments. Those of you looking for deeper insights on aftermarket brake clearances can view our Brake Clearance Table which will be updated as aftermarket kits become available for this chassis. If you have a specific aftermarket brake kit in mind for your M2, please follow the instructions listed on the FAQ section of the table to get clearance data for your specific brakes. A Fitment For You Beyond just providing prices and details on wheels, APEX strives to provide relevant information and fitment recommendations for the chassis we serve. A huge part of that is our fitment guides. More tire details and notes will be added to this guide as our knowledge of the chassis expands and grows. If you have fitment feedback or notes you’d like to have added to the guide, or questions about wheel fitment on this chassis, please start on our Support Page and give us a shout! Seeing is Believing PC: @jaedworks x @basicperformance_korea Take a deep dive with us into our ever-expanding library of G87 M2 content by clicking the gallery image below. Questions? Call: 925-245-0773 Email: expert@apexraceparts.com Web: www.apexraceparts.com Hours: M-F 9a-5p PST Your Fastest Lap is Calling! Our forged Sprint™ line was built to be extremely light while still offering a meaningful strength increase over our flow formed wheels. For those looking to shed as much weight as possible to improve lap times. ➡︎ 10K ton forged 6061-T6 aluminum ➡︎ Stronger Sprint™ spec inner lip ➡︎ Side-milled spokes for reduced weight ➡︎ Massive brake clearance ➡︎ Unmatched replacement program ➡︎ Lifetime structural warranty ➡︎ Independently tested and certified Order Now VS5-RS Finishes 10K Tons Of Pressure Our new forgings weigh as much as 120 pounds before machining. To form such a thick blank we require special equipment capable of 10,000 metric tons of pressure. This extreme pressure increases the strength of the aluminum by eliminating porosity and improving the grain structure. True Motorsport Blanks Many companies use 3rd-party blanks intended for non-motorsport wheels which can severely limit sizes, concavity, spoke design, and critical brake clearance. We designed our very own blank profiles from scratch which gives us total control over the final product, resulting in exceptionally deep spokes and stronger designs. Learn more about our true motorsport blanks. One of the most significant upgrades to our Sprint wheels is the addition of wider and deeper side-milled spokes. Any excess material that doesn’t add strength is carved out using a precision CNC ball cutter. Side-milling is often deemed cost-prohibitive by others, but for true performance without compromise, we believe it's essential.A Stronger Lightweight Wheel Our forged Sprint™ wheels are lightweight without the strength compromises found on typical lightweight wheels. First, we carved out as much material as possible, then we purposefully added one pound back to reinforce critical areas, creating a stronger inner lip and a higher load rating.¹ What’s the point of a lightweight wheel if it’s fragile? Weight Optimized We conducted extensive Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to reinforce high-stress areas and to remove material where it didn’t improve strength. The result is a wheel that is exceptionally light without the strength compromises found on typical lightweight wheels. Independently Tested We don't rely solely on computer simulations or unverifiable in-house testing. We believe independent testing is critical to protect consumers in this unregulated industry. We chose STL, an independent lab in Ohio, to test our Sprint™ wheels far above JWL standards, including increases in testing duration, impact drop height, and total load. Learn more about our rigorous independent testing. Tough Inner Lip Introducing the Sprint™ spec inner lip, with a unique channel profile that makes it even stronger than our previous designs. So even though our Sprint™ wheels are pounds lighter than comparable flow formed wheels, the inner lip is 32% stronger. Learn more about our Sprint™ spec inner lip. Big Brake Clearance From day one, APEX has been on a mission to build wheels that clear big brakes. Our new forged wheels are the product of everything we’ve developed over the past 10+ years, including an innovative high-clearance barrel design and vehicle-specific spoke profiles. Deeper Concavity Our new forgings were redesigned to create extra deep, concave spoke profiles. Their new shape allows us to make any profile, from flat to deep and everything in between. Each one is optimized for a specific application using 3D laser scans of factory and aftermarket brake kits. Paintless Knurled Beads Whether it's a day at the track or months of street driving, repeated hard braking and acceleration can make a tire slip along the bead seat and go out of balance, causing vibration. Knurled beads help, but are less effective when painted over. Our forged line features unpainted knurled beads that stay sharp and maximize grip. Learn more about why our forged wheels have unpainted knurled beads. Built for impact sockets Track wheels need track tools. Don’t settle for wheels that require undersized tuner lugs or thin walled sockets. All APEX wheels accommodate over-sized race lugs and impact sockets to make swapping wheels lightning fast. Laser-Engraved Specs As track enthusiasts ourselves, we know how frustrating it is to try to locate and decipher wheel specs that have been hastily hammered into the rim or become unreadable over time. With our new Sprint™ wheels, we chose to invest a little extra and laser-engrave the specs on the barrel, in plain sight, making them easy to find and read. (You’re welcome.) Additional Features Hub Centric - All APEX BMW wheels with a 5x120mm bolt pattern are purpose built featuring a 72.56mm center bore. No centering rings required. Center Caps - We don't charge extra for caps and we design our BMW wheels to be interchangeable with the OE roundel cap for enthusiasts seeking a clean factory look. All wheels come with our gloss Black APEX caps included. We also offer optional gloss red or gloss blue APEX caps. Hardware - APEX wheels can be used with all OEM mounting hardware, proper aftermarket hardware and wheel spacers. Wheel locks and stud conversion kits also work perfectly. TPMS - All APEX wheels accept OEM and aftermarket Tire Pressure Monitoring Sensors and standard fit valve stems. If your vehicle isn’t equipped with sensors or you choose to bypass them for your track/race car, then select from our metal stems available in multiple finishes. Lifetime Warranty All APEX wheels come with a lifetime structural warranty against defects in workmanship and materials, plus a 1 year finish warranty. Exchanges are fast, easy, and hassle-free. APEX Wheel Replacement Program While we've mentioned the program on these threads before, we wanted to share this freshly released video going through our Wheel Replacement Program with you all. This program is an under-appreciated part of buying APEX wheels that can be hugely valuable if you go off track midway through a lap or tackle the median of the street outside Cars & Coffee. Our goal wasn't just to make pushing your car to the limit more affordable but also to reduce the chances of a bent wheel being sold on the aftermarket. All 4 wheel set orders are eligible for this program and while we hope you won’t have to use it, you’re covered if you do. Learn more VS-5RS Gallery Order Now VS5-RS / Questions? Our engineering team put 2 years of hard work into our new Sprint Line and the forging dies that made them possible, so we were compelled to create a technical video that dives into the details. This video has a lot of great content our product descriptions don’t include. After watching, we’re confident you’ll truly appreciate why these features are so valuable. If you're craving more content, this should quench your thirst.

^^^Wheel & tire specs please?
Front tire looks taller than rear. Love that bronze color. Could use 3/4-1" lower. Debating 18" vs 19" wheel. Definitely need 305 section width tire at least in back though... |

I assume it was a quick testfit, but if you have more photos, we'd always love to see them. I couldn't read the tire sidewalls, but 285/35-19 square on the 19x10 ET12s is probably my most commonly sold G80 setup so that is likely correct. -Tom

In your fitment guide you say that the 18" wheel only works with base steel brakes. That's just the stock correct? In other words, you can't upgrade to something else down the road and keep the 18" |

The note was a holdover from the fitment being shown on the G80 M3 and G82/3 M4 fitment guide where they have access to the CCBs from the factory. The 18x10.5 ET18 should clear all the factory brakes for the M2 for now. It also clears some G8X M3/4 AP brakes that Essex sells. This does not mean it will clear every aftermarket kit available for the G87 though so if you're considering a specific kit, please let us know and we can check clearances if a template is available. -Tom

This is with a 305, and completely stock suspension. The tire sidewall is close to the strut body as you can see, but your clearance might be better with the narrower section width although the RE-71RS will run wide. Hope those photos help. -Tom

2 additional questions. My car is coming with the M Performance HAS (same as KW v2). Does the HAS require more clearance (wider spacer)? Is there another forged 18" or 19" option that will allow a square set up with 295s (or 285s) with no spacer with a HAS and ˜2 degrees camber?

I'm not 100% certain that the MP HAS kit will mirror this kit's clearance level or if it will be better or worse. As you can see a 5mm spacer was needed with this car and clearances were still tight. The thing about any coilover or HAS kit is that the ride height setting determines inner clearance to some degree. This car was low and because the lower spring perch on the KWs was set so far down, there was less inner clearance. Running a taller ride height or in the case of some coilovers a shorter spring can improve inner clearance dramatically. Here is a video of the G80 on these wheels: The thing to note especially about the 18x10.5 ET18 fitment is that it will scrub against your front wheelwell liners (the vents behind the wheelwell radiators) when turning at full lock, especially with spacers or wide tires. Even stock wheel fitments with spacers are getting rubbing in this area. Our 19x10 ET12 wheels can be run square and provide 12.4mm more inner clearance than the 18x10.5 ET18s. I'd only recommend using those with 285s, but they are the easier square fitment to run for sure. Hope that helps. -Tom

I've looked at it actually and I think our engineers modeled a wheel in that width and offset that will clear the steel brakes on the G80. That should carry over to the G87 M2.
Making the wheel wouldn't be an issue, but 285/40-18 tire availability isn't great: https://www.tirerack.com/tires/TireS...erformance=ALL 275/40-18 is much better, so if M2 owners are considering running that size square, or staggered with a wider 18 or 19 rear it could be worth producing? Most of the interest I've seen thus far has been larger diameters though. -Tom

Also it means I don't have to waste my limited brainpower worrying about fitment checks. I get that's there's value in running 18s, just not enough for me to bother. My personal take, YMMV of course! |
