New Guy M4 Questions...
Been lurking for a few years, figured it was time to post my lingering questions. If I'm posting to the wrong place, let me know. Be gentle, I'll get up to speed.
Background: Getting an M4 ordered early next year, likely 2016 model when available to order. Been a 2011 335i sport package (suspension, paddle shift, etc) convertible driver since late May 2010 in the Charlotte area. 1. I'm seeing a surprising lack of real world 0-60 and quarter mile numbers out there. After so much debate with HP, TQ, Dynos, under/over rating - I would think there'd be a ton of guys posting vbox and youtubes with numbers. Don't know why, but this is a big deal for me (I do, I'm a hooligan and love burning Mustangs, Camaros, Audis off the line at a light, even with my 335i... sorry, it's a thing with me). Is this thing really going to get under 3.9/4.0 and low 12s with all that torque and so lightweight on the standard tires? I figured we'd see 3.7/3.8 and sub 12 by now on a stock ride (right driver, track, day/conditions) 2. Will there be a competition or similar manufacturer offered set of upgrades to notch up HP, better suspension, etc? Are the currently listed performance parts (exhaust) making any real world performance difference out in the field? 3. Do we have a full view on what the 2016 M4 improvements/changes/adds will be vs. the 2015? If not, when does BMW usually start giving that guidance in the year? 4. Is all of this academic in light of the Tunes available out there if I'm really looking for a nice bump in performance? I've seen the Dinan, JB, etc. My only condition will be, it HAS to stay under warranty. My extended warranty on my 335i has saved me 8-9k net easy. Anyways, figured I'd make use of the substantial knowledge base out there. Thanks! |

Mine is on order though I have spent two months imagining how fast it will be.

Great questions.
1. M3 drivers tend not to be drag racers, so much as trackers. The car's real strength is in the handling. Yes, this car pulls well, and I don't doubt the sub-4 0-60 times quoted, but there are a lot of cars (some possibly cheaper) that can beat it 0-60. I don't know much that would on the ring though (from a practical standpoint). 2. You never know till it happens. I have heard this car won't get an LCI (Which I don't know whether to believe), but it seems likely that BMW would do a Comp package. 3. No. 4. Probably. ZCP will likely see some aesthetic and/or structural changes that you cannot get in a tune - lower, different suspension setting, etc., but tunes will get you most of the value. |

#3 - No one knows yet but i would expect it would be the middle of next year before you get any info that is confirmed. There will be rumors but nothing is certain until BMW sends out the official M.Y. 2016 changes.

It leaves a line fast enough, don't worry. With the numbers the idiot behind the wheel is always the one slowing it down. Don't let us put you off from these, they are great fun and way better looking than the suggested ones above.

you won't see any changes on the M4 for a few years; a couple more colors if anything and maybe they might break up the executive package (that would piss me off!!!), but nothing major at all. 2016 orders probably won't be till next summer; might as well just get a 2015......just do it!

Good answers... but...
Guys, appreciate the feedback, but one major correction...
I WAAAYYYY overplayed my hand on the acceleration point looking back at my post. It was a point of interest, but not even close to my top priority. I was explaining why I was asking the questions, not WHY I'M SHOPPING FOR A CAR. Yes, if I wanted pure 0-60 for the buck, I'd go with a GT500, ZL1 or GTR. But let me be clear, I will NEVER buy one of those cars. I seemed to have forgotten my audience: I absolutely LOVE the BMW driving experience, the unique ability to get the performance, looks, experience, luxury and feel that no other brand can provide in quite the same way. That's just with a sporty 3 series in the garage. Imagine how I and many others will feel getting into an ///M. I figure to track the car occasionally, have it as a semi-DD, mostly weekend/going out type ride. I seemed to have offended some sensibilities here. Whew, consider me warned in the future. |
