Needle on speedo goes beyond 160mph!

This is the quickest I've been so far. It just didn't stop accelerating and felt as solid as a rock... incredible. I guess the speedo is not 100% accurate? Does anyone know what actually happens at the limiter? Also, when I rev it, the needle goes a little way into the red when I change gear but again it didn't cut out - looked like more than 8500 to me?

Should have added, virtually dry road, and very gentle bends on a 4 lane carriage way with few other cars on the road and only for about 3 miles, which I got through very quickly.

speedos tend to read a bit optimisticaly. Idea being its safer for it to read higher than lower.

i also seem to remember reading that the fuel cutoff is a bit above the readline, 300 rpm seems to be stuck in my mind.

Ditto - 160mph on clock - crazy & yes more like 8500, 8400 rpm. Absolute stonking speed and have only hit limiter in first and second - and what happens is the engine revs drop then increase again (if your still flooring it) at a very rapid speed.

This is one question I had as the rev limiter redline clearly isn't at 8400 rpm.
Does the needle go beyond the redline in all gears?
Why do they show the redline at 8250 or so? Is it so you can shift at redline and not hit the limiter? The M5/6 limiters redline are at the exact 8250 point though.

Got to admit, roads up north are so much better! That's north of Luton!

It didn't feel as if it was going to cut out, I just changed as soon as I thought it was at 8400 but noticed it swing into the red a little. Same for all gears as far as I can remember. Did not notice the limiter once. Maybe, I began to think about changing at 8250 and then by the time I did it the revs were at 8500? Don't really know, will need to try it again tomorrow.

I agree - Wales and Scotland best, then leicestershire/home counties - but there are a few good uns south - especially the B roads but there's a great dual carriageway in Berks that's good for maxing out.

Now that I know you and eastie are London area, I feel an M3 cruise coming on....

Just saw your 'in Maidenhead' post. I did a great great run, off the M4 at J8/9, then down the dual carriage way on the way to Henley, same place??? Another amazing run is on the slip road off the M25 turning major left forever on the way to Egham to check out those red cars at Maranello! My car lives near Ricky now.

This has been mentioned many times. Speedo's are allowed to overread by upto 10%, but are forbidden by law to underread at all.

Also the speed limiter isn't very authoritive.

My E46 M3 used to go to an indicated 168mph.

Sorry man. You don't have to. From the pics I have seen, it does not.

Ok, just had some good wet driving, anyway here are additional photos about revs (mainly).

Still difficult to tell but I rekon it is 8250. Last one has poor focus but you'll see what I mean.

Some awesome roads in the Peak District too. Riddled with motorcycle blackspots though, and it seems from my visit there over New Year that the authorities, in a bid to tackle the mortality rate, have regraded loads of the roads 50mph and put GATSO's all over the place. The London Police State is spreading North!

Is that second photo at idle? I ask because mine ticks over at 500rpm.

No M-Button today, JB?

Hey, I was in the middle of an edit changing 8400 for 8250!! I think the red line starts at 8250 and gives you latitude just before 8500. First 2 pics were when I just started the car and so it was warming up but yes mine idles at around 500(ish). My M Button puts all 4 factors at max and I use it when I feel the urge only. So far that's been when I see a P car on the road and I don't mean the entry level variety or when I just feel the urge anyway. Love it!

Need a thread on this topic. Shortly after my little experience today when I turned off for NEC I saw a very quick unmarked Impreza. They then pulled over some boy racer in an E46 non-M car. Flashing blue lights in the windscreen. New thread should be about Road Angel or otherwise?? Just starting.
