Does the DCT make some racket?
I did some searching but didn't find any mention of this exact racket.
My wife owned an E92 M in the past which was a 6MT, but we test drove a DCT car yesterday. As I was pulling back to the parking lot to complete the test drive I started noticing a very faint rattle/tap as I was driving slow then letting off the gas. At parking lot speeds I wouldn't be surprised if the clutch was decoupling. Back in the parking lot I would rev it up in neutral then let it settle back to idle once settled I could hear the faint rattle/tap. I opened the hood and traced it to the drivers side towards the rear. My first instinct was that it could be the beginnings of rod bearing failure but later got to thinking that maybe the DCT clutch packs are noisy and rattle in neutral. Either way, I took an oil sample to send off to Blackstone. This was super quiet. I had to reproduce it about 10 times or so before my wife picked up on it. So, do all/most DCT M3's have some kind of faint rattle coming from the bellhousing area or does this one likely have other issues? Last edited by sinking; 01-12-2015 at 10:11 AM.. |

I have DCT too and never heard any rattle noises . Can you post a video ? And take cam close to the front wheel on driver side while reving slowly to 3K ? I could listen to the video because I just know how our S65 "NOT" should sound . Built year and how many miles on it ?

The way you describe it, sounds like symptoms from the rod bearings going out?! Cause the DCT doesn't make any noise like that! Maybe a small winding noise, but that's normal and it doesn't come from the outside.
Don't buy that car! |

It's a 2009 with 68k miles. A plus of this car is it is CPO and still under warranty so if my Blackstone report shows elevated lead he will be taking it to the dealer to get resolved. |

Surely it must be quite a difference between a DCT rattle and rod bearing knock.
I've never experienced any rattle/noise from my DCT other than the usual occasional "clunk". If the car is what you want I'd double check carefully before I'd walk away. Good luck! |

Mine, as well as other DCT M3's I've driven, make some rattling noises especially when coming to a stop but I've never heard any noises coming from the transmission when in N or at a stop.

If what others are saying is true, my bearings have been on their 'way out' since I got the car 34k miles ago (it has 34k miles now). When coming to a stop or even sitting at a light, I hear stuff going on with the transmission, like it's anticipating my next move. I don't hear these noises otherwise, just when stopped or when coming to a stop.

if it sounds like keys jingling at low rpm's between gears (as it's about to shift to another gear)...i have that noise..I usually here it going down an alley or thru a garage...
took a drive with the shop foreman last month about it when I was in for service..we replicated the noise and said it was normal, just the transmission working thru the gears... I had him note the noise on my paperwork just in case.. again..very low, short, slight rattle (chatter) in lower gears..between 2K-3K RPMS..usually before an up, not down shift...

OMG IT'S TEH ROD BARINGS
Not every little nagging sound means INSTANT ENGINE FAILURE. I have a DCT and I, too, have noticed the gears doing their thing while coasting to a stop. It's most evident when going from 2 -> 1 slowly. Perfectly normal. |

My 2011 would sometimes clunk when shifting into low gear at a coast towards a stop. After an OEM software update, though, that stopped and shifting in general was smoother, even in D mode. Did this car get all the software updates? Some would be done only if the owner complained of an issue and/or requested it.

Mine does this. It has 36k miles. Definitely exactly like rolling marbles. Very faint though. The gear changing at low speeds also sounds like stuff clunking around, but from what I've been told it's normal, especially when not warmed up.

Ok, i just got my car on the 31st and I'm hearing a lot of rod bearing talk. Is this some sort of recall, or they wont fix it unless its broken "bearing issues"???
