Close call today with black ice
Anyone driving in the tri state area this morning wouldve noticed the black ice all over the streets. I was driving very slowly through a residential area when all of sudden the car started drifting and the traction light began to flash. There were cars up ahead, possibly a pile up and for a couple seconds I thought I was going to head straight into them. The ABS did a good job but what saved my ass was probably the winter tires as I was able to stop without hitting the cars in front.
The rest of the way to work I drove very carefully and I saw many many accidents along the way. You still had idiots speeding down the highway weaving in and out of lanes. This was my first experience with black ice and it was probably one of the scariest commute so far. I can't imagine what would've happened if I had summers or all seasons on. To everyone driving around here please be careful and put winter tires on if you haven't already!

Normally, you don't want to stomp the brakes on ice. All that's going to do is facilitate a slide. Let off the gas and feather the brakes. Doing this will keep your wheels from sliding on the ice and it'll keep some of the control with you.

Yea I didn't stomp on the brakes but the abs still kicked in even when I gently pressed them. Luckily I was going maybe 20 mph so it wasn't too bad. I was actually more worried about other cars hitting mine cuz they couldn't stop.

It's too late by then. ABS isn't going to bring traction back once you're sliding.

Nothing you can do there. That's where insurance comes into play. Do you slowly apply the throttle during these situations? You could be going slow and still have too much throttle. IF you feel like you need to, up shift into 2nd to mitigate any "surprises" from the torque. We don't have much down low, but on ice, it doesn't take much to start sliding.

happy you didn’t have an accident!
yes its a mess here and i saw many accidents on the road today…..I got my car just before winter and i am happy I have access to three other vehicles. In weather like this the M stays home I am for the most part a responsible driver but that does t guarantee an accident won’t happen. there are lots of idiots and irresponsible people using the same roads i have to……. |

Ok on a serious note, for anyone with DCT you should always be in S1 (or D1 if you're a "D" driver) in these conditions. |
