Low gas indicator

When does this indicator come on for the M4? Is there an ability to code it to come on later?

Mine usually comes on when there's less than 50 miles left in range.

No idea, my tank never goes below 1/4 tank. Letting it go all the way down can't be good for these engines.

It comes on a bit too early in my opinion. Maybe around 1/8th of a tank left?

50 miles to go. Which is about 2.5 gallons. I don't know this for sure, but one of the reasons that BMW might have set the light level with a higher fuel level is because they want to ensure that you fill up before you run the tank level below the point needed to cool the fuel pump, which is located in the tank. It could be their thinking is "we need at least X to cover the fuel pump under normal operating conditions. Let's set the warning light at 2X,"

Mine comes on a little under 1/4 tank; E92 was a little over that mark. It is codable to a lower level, I believe.

That is exactly correct. With direct injection if it goes dry the components will overheat extremely quick and be damaged. Even if you let ran out of gas just one time it will shorten the life of those parts vastly.

Yup, about a quarter tank or just below it.
