btw, not same engine but very similar sound here:
Seems caused by tensioner chain. This m3post thread seems to refer to same issue on our engines: http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthr...=412843&page=5 |

this is normal.
not the same noise that i have reported in my extensive thread. my understanding is this is caused by a 'dry vanos'. you'll notice this is much more pronounced the longer the car sits without being started. also, if you were to take a look at the audio of this noise, you'll notice it starts instantly after ignition takes place. the noise i was reporting was different, took place about 0.5 secs after ignition took place. |

Yes, normal
Normal. There are a ton of threads about this on here --- rattle on startup. My E93 M3 2009 does this about 50% of the time on cold start. A pal's M3 does the same. Not a great noise, but the dealer told me it's normal and it's definitely something that occurs on most of these cars.

Look around on here. One guy had his engine basically torn down and rebuilt trying to locate that noise. I don't know if there was ever a resolution. There was a PUMA case posted by someone also where it was fixed by the dealer. Something to do with the vanos gear / chain tensioner. Mine does it. It sounds like grinding bolts around in my engine for a second after the car cold starts sometimes. It's a slapping chain against a tensioner is my assumption. Doesn't make me feel warm and fuzzy inside, but I doubt any of us would have much luck resolving it.

It's the metallic clunk noise when engine is cold .
A lot of S65's have this problem , and is caused by the Vanos-Gears . Here a video of a very loud clunk noise , the video is not my car .

Is it a possibility that this sound is just a dry valve train upon start up? Reason I ask, is because I have noticed this in other high performance engines, mainly the S2000. I have owned 4 S2000s and all of them made this same noise right upon start up, if the car was sitting for a while. Over on S2ki it was mentioned that it was due to the valve train not getting oil instantly up top, and making the noise until it did (only a second). I have only owned my '11 M3 for a couple months, but it makes this noise if the car has been sitting for 12+ hours, and it sounds just like the S2000. Just my 2 cents.

I agree, it does seem like this. Btw, I'm a car mechanic, on pretty much every engine (various makes) that I've changed oil & filter on (that I can remember over the past ~25 yrs lol), they make the exact same rattle on start up (as per caslca's video, not the horrendous clonk on the 3rd video!), obviously that is down to the oil being drained, & the new oil having to find its way all round the engine, although I believe the noise is primarily top end. When I heard my M3 do this on cold start up (and the oil wasn't changed) I was rather concerned! Glad to hear it appears to be 'normal', for these anyway. For any long shut downs I'm toying with the idea of removing the fuel pump relay so that I can crank it without it firing up & allowing the oil pressure to build up. Although I would somehow have to bleed off residual fuel pressure 1st & then also clear out related codes. Unless we can just crank them via a diagnostics computer? Anyone tried this work around? |
