CPO or 10k$ off?
So here I am again on the hunt... For my E90.
Went to see a really nice one today. 2011.75 E90, DCT, Jerez black, red leather interior, fully loaded, no ECP. 83,000km, 43,000$CDN. Put on the road Jan 2012. Up next, BMW ppi and Blackstone's oil test. From I can gather in my research, this car would cost around 55,000$CDN at a dealership, if I could ever stumble upon one.. But it would come with a 2 year CPO. Now I'm trying to evaluate if, once the ppi and oil test come back all positive, 10k$ less than a dealership price is a worthy substitute for a 2 year CPO... Now of course a BMW warranty is second to none, but is it reasonable to assume I would spend less than 10k$ in maintenance in two years provided no engine blow up or anything out of the ordinary? I would be driving the car in summer only, about 12,000km per season. Stored in the winter. |

You can always buy aftermarket warranty and even BMW warranty after you buy the car (BMW version won't be as good, but cheaper than $8k USD)

For $8k, you could do some repairs. For about half that, you could do a preventative maintenance rod bearing change, you could do throttle actuators when they fail, you could change all fluids and plugs and filters. Even if you paid more for a CPO car, you would not get a rod bearing change unless your engine failed and then the car would be out of action for 2 months rather than 2 days because the entire engine would have to be replaced, your throttle actuators might not fail within the 2 year cpo period, and BMW does not do any maintenance under CPO.

i think it depends on where you buy it from.
i held out for a CPO car, paid more but there were issues with the car they didnt know about; some poop cosmetic repairs the previous owner did and didnt report. I was able to get the dealer to redo things properly which would have cost me $4k to get done at a BMW certified shop otherwise. check the vehicle's history and try to best determine how the dealer you bought from obtained the car. i guess a BMW dealer wouldnt want to put that car back on the lot with that mileage so it was bound to end up at a secondary dealer but those guys don't always do their full due diligence or disclosure on sale...

M3's in Canada are so cheap right now... Don't worry about CPO!
I got my 2012 CPO for 52 CAD. $1600 is a seriously cheap accident on an M3... I bet it was a super low velocity impact that scuffed a bumper, so they replaced it. Some tit probably pulled too close parking or something.

If you are concerned about a warranty, you could buy a third party warranty for much less than $8,000 usd.

1. Car is high(er) mileage and BMW dealer's didn't want to take a chance on selling an M3 in fall/winter. 2. Car has some shady history and the BMW dealer didn't like what he saw From what I understand, these cars only hit non-BMW auctions after the car has been passed over on the internal dealer auction. PPI will hopefully identify everything you need to know. Where are you PPI'ing the car? I've used Bimmersport and Engineered Automotive for PPI on M3 in the GTA. |

Verdict #1 of 2 is in...
So PPI at BMW dealership was done today on this 2011, 83,000 km DCT full equip M3. All in all good news... Just two little things... 3000$ !!!! What?! 3000$? It's not as bad as it sounds...
First off, and small detail, but expensive one... Passenger mirror won't fold in. It's loose. Apparently very common. Mirror 900$, +labour total 1200$... Not worried, I can find this part cheaper and get it installed way cheaper... Plus, I can screw it in place and fix it later... The other thing bothers me a little, but I hope you guys can chime in. There are traces of oil on the DCT gasket. Meaning it could be leaking. Evidence shows the gasket is sweating., and probably not leaking... Dealer quote... 1350$ to change the gasket. Includes 500$ of oil (!!!!!!!), a 300$ oil pan (???) and 14 bolts 130$. Is this something I need to change right away? Don't get me wrong, I want to change it, but should I get one summer of driving out of it before I store it and then get it changed before I store it? Also, is this something I can get done at the indie BMW shop? Or should messing with DCT be left to the dealership guys? Oh, I forgot. There is apparently a lot of water in the trunk where the spare would normally be. It was explained to me it's probably just the drain plugs that need cleaning... Is there a possibility there's something serious here? The seller/third party dealer told me he shampooed the car and it's probably left over water... Need input here... Thanks for helping a brother out. Blackstone was shipped today, so I should have results Thursday. If it's clean, then me thinks I'm buying this... Unless, of course, my questions as cited above point to serious issues. |

The DCT oil pan gasket is sold only as a pair with the plastic oil pan itself, so that is normal (although the online price is $160). You can get the Pentosin DCT fluid online a considerably cheaper than $500 (see ECS Tuning, $259 for fluid, filters, and drain plugs). The pan bolts are normally re-used. A small amount of seepage does not mean you have to change the gasket right away.
Definitely not normal to have water in the spare tire well. I would want to know more about how that occurred. This isn't a '68 Chevelle, shouldn't leak water in anywhere, so hopefully the story about the shampoo job is true (too many hookers in the trunk?). |
