New M3 or used M5, E63amg,ECT Family of soon to be 4

Want a new sedan. Really like the M3 but can get an M5 for a few dollars cheaper on the used market. I have a family of 4 + the Dog(my favorite family member) and would like the extra space the 5 series provides (does it? I assume it is larger because it is a bigger platform?) Any input from members with families would be great. My next dilemma would be wait to see the C63amg or get a used e63amg or maybe caddy cts-v. I love BMW's electronic interface which is important to me and have a great relationship with my service advisor at bmw for my X5M. How is this beast in the snow with dedicated snow tires?

The dog is your favorite family member? Damn...

What are the ages/sizes of the family members (and the dog)? I have kids and the M3 is more than enough space for kids and our dog. If you have teens and a Rottweiler you might need something bigger.

The M5 isn't a whole lot larger inside. An inch here and there for a much larger vehicle. Here are some specs:

FRONT SHOULDER ROOM

58.3 in.

REAR HEAD ROOM

38.3 in.

REAR LEG ROOM

36.1 in.

REAR SHOULDER ROOM

56.2 in.

M3

FRONT HEAD ROOM

FRONT LEG ROOM

42.0 in.

FRONT SHOULDER ROOM

wow, lots to unpack there.

A few questions/comments:

- how old is the existing kid? (young I assume given the 'soon to be'). For 2 teenagers, back of M3 might be tight on longer trips. M5 or E63 will be more comfortable. (the measurements are not that much bigger but, from first hand experience, for an average sized adult the back seat of an E class is a little more spacious than the back seat of the F80)

- none of M3, M5 or E63 will be good for 4 + dog. (unless you ask Lups) I would recommend an E63 wagon if you want to rip faces off yet haul everyone (2 legs and 4 legs) around in style. (I have the E350 wagon, which is great, and, once that one is done, E63 will be next....) If you like the way caddy's look, you could look at CTS-V wagon too (I don't so I didn't....)

If your children are young/smaller, M3 is fine. My kids are 8 and 9 and we can cruise around town and reasonable length road trips just fine (with 2 hockey bags in the trunk)

- with dedicated winter tires this car is no problem at all in bad weather.

You're always dragging me into these. I'm going to have to list the faults of these as a family vehicle into a single thread one day just to save the energy of answering each time!

Go for the wagon op. Any bigger and you'll hate it, any smaller and the wife will never shut up about it

Why not a x5m or e63 wagon? Some those would be a better fit.

Who else do I know who would be crazy enough to use one of these for kids and pets?

Good point. I'll write it up later. The damn arm rest tried to kill me again and I wasn't even out from the dealers lot.

I own one. Tuned to 640hp 630 tq. I have a g37 now so its not a big deal they are in the same class of car and a wagon does not provide that much space other than the ability to carry the dog. Hell, I bought a trailer hitch cargo carrier for extra space in the X5M highly recommend by the way. It just has be able to take the entire family mostly just the 4 of us once in a while. And yes that bitch (the dog) is my number one. (its a joke.... is it?) I have a 3.5 year old and a new born.
How about the snow? I will be stepping down from awd to rear drive. I will buy the best tire set up available for the winter but never had a RWD car.
Is the M3 size the same as the 3 series, I have a loaner right now.It will be my wifes daily and worries about that?
I wanted the infiniti EAU to go into production but....

Personally, I've felt like the new M5 is a little too big to be sporty. My choice would be a new M3.... 36mo lease and service included. Easy decision...

The E63 S can haul the mail and the 4MATIC AWD is great.

The F10 M5 is absolutely gorgeous (currently my wallpaper). I could flip a coin and end up being happy with either of those.

I've also driven the CTS-V many times. It too is a solid choice but the sensation of speed is dulled by the car's weight and the well-insulated cabin.

The F10 M5 is very solid...almost bought one 10 months ago, but went with E63S instead. Just had a well rounded set of attributes for a daily driver. That lease is in the process of being assigned purely based on the miles I drive and the looming end of lease cost for excess miles. Just leased an M3 last night. Very fun car, beautiful styling but more singular in attributes versus an E63. Traction on the E63S was unreal in the wet given 577hp, 590 lb ft. You have a total first world problem on your hands. Can't speak to the Caddy having never driven it.

all are great choices , If rear leg room isn't the biggest factory if your children are still young , I would say m3, but others have brought up e63/e63 wagon might be a bit more spacious if thats your concern especially with a dog, Im not a huge wagon person but was driving next to a e63 wagon S or black or whatever they call it now and amazing in person, f10 is a looker too! all great choices ! good luck

why not a G63 or a Porsche Cayenne Turbo? You already have an X5M and M5 isn't that big for a family of 4 and a dog. Lose the dog and I think an M5 is great fit. forgot to say that's a sweet X5M

You should probably take gas into consideration if you're going to be in a family of 4.

In that case you should be a tad weary of the M5 because that car isn't extremely great on mileage. While the M3 can actually get decent mileage even though it's what it is :P

I would say X4/X5 and M3 would be a good combination.
