Rotors/Free Maintenance question.
My car falls off free maintenance in a couple of weeks. I noticed today that the front rotors have quite a lip around the edge. Is it safe to assume they will fall within the minimum tolerance and need replacement? Sorry for the crappy picture I had to crop it for it meet the forums max attachment size.

never hurts to ask. When my maintenance was almost up, my stealer said my rotors are 0.2mm (not a typo) more than the threshold and so they refused to change them.

My dealer said that my rotors were warped but pads were fine so refused to change them. I had to make a big stink about it to get anything done.

Are those OEM M3 rotors? They should be cross drilled if they are.
Have you had the brake pads replaced before but the rotors we said to be within spec? If so you may have a chance. You may be able to get BMW to evaluate the brakes if you make a complaint about the brake feel, weird intermittent vibrations or sponginess. You may not be successful walking in saying you need your brakes replaced because of the way they look. They are usually pretty strict on when the "car" tells them the brakes need service.

Well...whatever the case is, make sure you get within replacement spec and get that covered. The service is not cheap. And yea, why aren't they drilled?

The rotors are going to cost you a thousand dollars just in parts for all 4 corners.

How long do the stock brakes usually last between $1000 cost is dropped out of the account should you have to pay for them out of pocket? You could shave that 20% off in a day on the right roads.

You must literally drive 99% hwy in rural areas or you only engine brake.
Whatever it is, I can guarantee you, you're not having as much fun as you should before your rod bearings blow up and you don't have this car anymore. |

I bought the car last year with 76k miles, no idea how it was driven. I've heard of some E9* M3's (on this forum) with over 90k on original front rotors.

If you have good brakes you better have good money too. Eventually she's gonna cash that chip in.

BMW changes your rotors when you need new pads under their maintenance plan. So if you have OEM pads, run them down and you should get new rotors and pads.

I don't think so. I have had pads replaced without rotors under maintenance plan. They measure the rotors and replace them only if they are under spec.

I've had two sets of front rotors replaced with new pads. The front rotors were 1mm (29.44 mm) away from minimum width (28.4) and the pads were low enough to trigger the service light. My service advisor told me that's how they always do it with the M cars since they cannot resurface the rotors at the dealership. Even if they didn't replace the rotors, I would be extremely disappointed if they didn't at least resurface the rotors when they put on new pads. I would talk to your service advisor. Perhaps, he kept your expensive rotors and sold them for profit. lol Dealerships are not run by angels, hence the common name on these forums, "stealership." |
