Sounds like a hybrid as a daily driver for those that enter the zone reguraly and unleash the M on the outer city roads.

Well, I don't like these measures either. But let's face it: Using an M3 or an SUV as a daily commuter is plain stupid. If people don't realise this and use public transport or reasonable cars, this is what happens...

This sort of thing depresses me so much. The so-called free world is becoming a dystopic prison.

I've driven around London many times and it's like 10% Toyota Priuses (almost all of them are black interestingly) now.
BUT what this article didn't address is that people who live within the zone get a 90% discount on the charge and most of the people who can afford an M3, Bentley, P-car, etc live within the zone in Belgravia, Knightsbridge, Chelsea, etc. (this is why the Western Extension was passed in my opinion) So I don't think this will be too much of a hardship on most people except those who live in Chiswick. Plus it just ups the property values once again for those within the zone.

However this Livingstone chap runs London without any checks & balances it seems to me.

...and what you fail to realise is that the 90% discount does not apply to the most polluting (Band G) cars, i.e. the £25 a day is for residents too. Now, that really makes the western extension a real money-spinner for Red Ken. I am expecting Band G used car values to drop as Londoners sell for lower emissions vehicles before October. The good news is, a 335i is just below Band G so it's only £0.80 per day for residents... and tuning the 335i makes no difference to the charge!

Wow all those Bentleys I see parked around Lowndes Square every time I'm there are in trouble I guess! Had no idea about the Band G thing. When are Londoners going to vote Red Ken out??

Register your M3 as a minicab. Small fee to pay on registering and then exemption from the charge.

- that really depends what kind of public transport is available and how much time it adds to your daily commuting. We do a sort of car-sharing and use our M3 daily.

I really don't see how an M3 or a Continental GT or whatever causes any more CONGESTION than a Prius. This policy is actually a complete mis-use of the technology that was brought in to ease congestion in central London.

The solution many people (like me) arrive it is to buy or retain another smaller car, which can only increase both congestion and pollution. The fact is that to most people this is far prefereable to buses (which are frankly revolting whether you are inside or behind them).

You're right about congestion and also that public transport might suck in some places. However I think that pollution does depend on car size and efficiency.

At least the folks in your government have apparently not been snowed by all the "light trucks should be exempt because they are used for work" propaganda and lobbying. Its all a bit stomach turning to get sacked with a giant gas tax when you know the folks with grossly less efficient road barges are paying none. Not to mention the tax built-in to the MSRP for BMW to pay for their CAFE (= extortion) violations.

That said, certainly I will take our car and gas prices over the rest of the world's any day.

I think it's funny that the 335i is 218g/Km, while 335xi is 232g/Km, basically you go from 8/day to 25/day just for AWD. E92 M3 is 295g/Km according to bmw.de, for all those too lazy to check.

Did you know that vegitarians produce more carbon dioxide than meat eaters?
It's true. Eating animal fat, reduces the amount of carbon dioxide you produce for any given metabolic rate. If you don't believe me, google "respiratory quotiant" and have a read.

If Red Ken is serious, he should put a congestion charge on vegitarians too.

What a load of crap. Let me guess commercial vehicles get a free pass? Anyone stop to wonder who contributes the most to pollution?
