Did you hate the 1200 miles break in?
Picking up the M3 tomorrow and wanted to see opinions of what everyone went through the first 1200 miles.
Did you really keep revs under 5k? I'll be driving from LA back to SF area along the 1 and 101. I know there will be times where i'll be tempted to go WOT. How was your first ~1200 miles before service? |

Hard break-in is the way to do it!

Not unless you are convinced BMW engineers were exercising their German sense of humor when they specified drive-train brake-in instructions in the manual. Go google "german sense of humor" ... a

Honestly, if there was a genuine concern about obeying proper break-in procedure, why wouldnt BMW physically restrict the RPMs via the ECU until the 1200 mi service??

Haha, I wrote up my minor fucked up start with Peter. We truly had the time of our lives and one day I'll add to that all the pages that I didn't post then but wrote anyway.
In the signature is vol 2. I'm pretty sure this summer will be a better one.

I still baby my cars during break-in, but I 100% agree on the gentle warm-up process. Pretty much all of the wear on an engine occurs before the metal's had a chance to expand and the oil has had a chance to reach operating temperature and viscosity. Be very kind to your engine while it's warming up.

I try to keep my highest shifts at 5K. I may have gone over six once..or twice. Not really keeping count. I have kept it under 100 if that helps. I do fully warm up the engine before engaging in any shenanigans.

Not at all.
I did it driving wonderful European roads while on vacation with my wife and two kids. I have such fond memories of that period

Amazing how people will believe something like this over all the automotive engineers. Wow! I know there are always crazy ideas like this but I'm shocked at how many believe this nonesense.

The night I got my car (we ordered it), we stopped back by the dealership later in the night to pick our other car up after dinner. I let my girlfriend drive the M3 home, and I drove our other car.
The first thing she did was pull out of the dealership and redline the first 3 gears down the street with 10 miles on the odometer. I asked her about it when we got home and she said, "I thought you would like hearing the exhaust (M performance)....." The next thing she said was,"This car is fast!" |

Let her warm up, then drive it like it was meant to be driven!
I plan on taking mine to the Nurburgring right after delivery...
