JL Subwoofer Install Question

Question for those who have installed an aftermarket subwoofer and amp. Had a JL audio XD300/1 installed today and the shop stated that the pre-amp signal was low at 2V and recommended a line level converter that attenuates the signal and increases the voltage to the amp. Has anyone else needed one of these beasts (cost of $120 vs $20 for a basic line level converter). The installer said that the signal will be cleaner and the result will be better bass.

I think I had one of these installed in my older car but I'm not sure. Give my installer a call and he can tell you right away what you need to do. He's a nice guy and knows everything about car audios.

Do you have base or HK audio? Are you using a JL audio amp? You should not need this for a decent amp which will have the input signal voltage adjustment dial.

Found the issue... The jackass installer did not connect the remote power cable to a power source. He used a line-output converter that senses the voltage of the speaker output as the remote power sensor. Had he not BS'd about doing lot's of BMW's he would have known that the output voltage of the speaker is only 2V and not strong enough for the amp to sense.
