Carbon Ceramic Brakes no stopping in rain
Hey guys,
just had my 3rd "almost accident" in the rain. Gladly I always had some space left to avoid a crash. When I'm driving some time in the rain my brakes don't have any stopping power within a couple of seconds (2-3 seconds). I am pushing the pedal to the ground - absolutely nothing happens until the brakes are "dry". When they begin to get some grip then the car pulls left like hell. This is really terrifying - don't dare driving in the rain anymore now... Already found a post in a German forum - that guy seems to have the same problems. BMW told him he should brake more often when it is raining. That's a nice joke to me.... Anyone here got similar experiences with the CCBs? |

Nope, it doesn't rain in Los Angeles
I notice this when i leave a carwash but a few taps on the brakes around 40pmh warms them up quickly so no issues

I've got CCB's on my 2016 build, but now you have me second guessing my decision. I do live in Portland, Oregon where it rains 6+ months out of the year. |

Yeah, the CCB literature states they have diminished power unless warm so no surprise you come flying off the highway with cold brakes in the rain and wait until the last minute to brake and can't. It's good you you, teaches you that your car will make the turn when you don't think it will.

This is all true except the pedal going to the floor comment. Anyone cutting in front of me on the freeway in a rainstorm is going to get blasted. Pain in the ass, to be honest.

The CCBs don't have the automatic brake drying function used with the standard brakes.
The pulling to the left is more than likely down to those brakes drying quicker as the right brakes will be getting more water splashed up due to the camber on the roads |

I think that is more than a pain in the ass.
It is life threatening... I will also drive the M4 in winter. Snow and so on over here. Wont be able to get the car stopped even with 10mph then ?? |

I've experienced the same issues and I have to agree that it is pretty scary. All of the $$ spent on getting the best brake package for the car and then finding out that there is zero stopping power when you are driving in the rain... I almost crashed my car the first time that I encountered this issue.
In my case, the M4 is my toy car, so I don't really drive it in the rain by choice, but sometimes mother nature surprises you... |

yes that's what really is making me angry right now.
salesman talks me into CCBs as they are the best bla bla bla. Now I'm stuck with squeeking, wheel destroying brakes that won't stop my car in rain - and probably going to kill me one day! really frightened of the winter right now - what the f*** am I supposed to do in snow and cold conditions with these damn brakes... In my opinion - it should not be allowed to sell something like this for street use. Or at least you should be getting a warning before buying this shit. |

Snow will be fine. I have been diving mine during the winter here in Toronto and going though heavy snow inside the wheels as well. I can still stop, but after car washes, just make sure you drive slow and do some stop and go brake to dry it up. It only affects if there is heavy rain or trucks splashing water onto your sides/wheels/brakes. If you are just driving freely on the highway without much traffic, there will not be much problem with braking in the rain.

it is like a motorcycle in the rain. you must tap the brakes to dry them off every minute or so. depends on how hard it is raining.
maybe block off the air ducts before driving in rainy days? |

Yeah but if crash you will still have swag since you won't have brake dust.

I thought BMW had brake drying technology that is linked with the windshield wipers. When my foot was on the brake (like at a light) I could actually feel the brake peddle pulse everytime the wipers moved in my 335i?
Havent driven in the rain yet in the M3 They didn't carry this technology over with the CCBs?

I have the same experience except the car remains straight and the pedal does not go to the floor.
The issue I really watch for is on highway driving in heavy rain and I find the brakes go really "wooden" if you haven't braked quite firmly for a few minutes. I really have to pay attention to regularly tapping the brakes - not sure if this is just clearing the water or getting some heat into the rotors - I suspect the latter. I have no issue with back road driving in heavy rain - where clearly the brakes are being used frequently. On the positive side, love the brakes on the track. |

I've only noticed this coming out of a car wash in the winter. For the brakes to do this, there has to be side spray. Apart from that I've had no heavy rain problems and no problems either when it's -35 C outside. Thanks for making me think of that.
