Why is the MT 6 speed and the DCT 7?

Can someone explain why the manual has 6 gears and the DCT has 7?

Probably so the 6 speed guys would not lose another 2/10th on another shift! Lol

No seriously I think it's because they would need to develop a new transmission with a different shift pattern. Probably similar to the GM/Porsche offering for the new C7s. Not sure if BMW could justify the development cost with autos and DCT being so good! Purist or not they need to justify the cost vs reward to the board.

^^lol.

I have limited experience with dct, but it is a different car with it. I rarely make it to sixth gear with the manual, same with the dct.

Sure, a seven speed manual would take a sec, but I'm not that old or a grumpy man that my purist ways wouldn't stretch to it.

Not entirely sure but I will say my one and only complaint with my 6MT F83 is that I wish I had a taller top gear. Minor, but a 7th gear (or a taller 6th) would come in handy.

Yeah the gearing means you're redlining at 180 MPH. I mean, c'mon I've got places to go I can't be doing this all day!

7th gear has nothing to do with performance and has everything to do with fuel efficiency.

Yeah! That's why invited you! You wouldn't ruin my milk runs with bad gearing and slow speeds.

I truly am sorry, but I must send a friend request your way. You sir are just so damn cool, I want to bask in your glory.

Because 7 speed manual transmissions are still a rarity and the OEMs probably charge a nice premium for them.

Ok, so I answered your question, now you owe me one: Why don't you have your shift key fixed, already?

people use gears in between 3-5th gear?

I thought we just redline 1st and 2nd and then shift to 6th?

I'll take a 6 speed that hangs around 3k rpm at 80 mph over being forced to use an auto.
