Another Oil Cooler Incident
Happened to me today. Ran over this wire apparatus and it started dragging. Immediately pulled over and noticed the oil leaking. I shut the engine down in plenty of time I think. It wasn't a catastrophic oil leak; more of a trickle. Anyway it's now at the dealer. I wonder how much a new oil cooler radiator is going to be. I was suppose to go to VIR Friday. That's probably doubtful now.

That sucks... I guess the upgraded aluminum shield is something to consider nowadays

woah. that's pretty crazy that it ripped into the plastic undercarriage with such a small little wire thingy.
nice and quick thinking. good thing we have an opportunity to learn from other's mistakes on these forums.

Call your insurance company. Just pay the deductible. Even though it looks like it's just the cooler I'm sure some panels or part of your undercarriage was damaged. Do you have a BMW certified collision center near you? That may be a better choice than the actual dealership.

Sorry this happened to you. I hope everything turns out okay.
A little off topic... I know I've said this before but I love your car. It's lovely. And even if it's on a flatbed, it looks damn good. Last edited by x.shell; 09-14-2015 at 08:39 PM.. |

The aluminum shield probably would not help in this case.

Looks like a jacked up piece of 8-10 gauge bull panel. Pretty strong wire.

That was a quick and SMART move you made to come to a stop ASAP.
Sorry to hear about this. As others have suggested, it would be a good idea to claim this under your insurance -- No telling what other damage may have occurred (READ: The cost may be more than we think...). Good Luck, OP. |

I wonder if the great minds at BMW think this vulnerable area is a problem yet? Buddy of mine just last week had a rock hit the site and his car is in service. So the link for IND. $700 for a metal protective plate. That's a high price to pay for that.

Dang, sorry to hear. Good thing you pulled over quick, hopefully no damage to the engine.
Like others have said, your car looks amazing, even on the tow truck.

Those coolers, especially the fins, are pretty soft. It really wouldn't take much to cause a leak.

Thanks guys. I'll keep everyone posted on the progress of the repair and post pics when I get them of the actual damage. The oil cooler shield might help but the problem is that you need airflow for obvious reasons. That is always going to keep the possibility of something damaging the radiator. The openings for airflow will also be openings for foreign objects to enter.
And for the record, I don't have the shield. There seemed to be some confusion about that.

Or you drilled into your own oil cooler and had to pay for it? Which one is it - because I sure as hell hope a dealer didn't make you pay for their fuck up. |
