The Future of SUV's is here!

If the i8 is the future for sports sedans and sports cars, this has to be the future of SUV's.

Especially if they also offer 7 seats like the new XC90 T8, will be even better

A third row wouldn't not fit in this car.

It would if it was designed around the battery like the T8 XC90. They didn't just stick the battery in the trunk like BMW and Mercedes did...

Turbo -- Congrats on your upcoming delivery!

I know you'll soon be distracted, but please take a few minutes when you can to give us a quick overall review on drive-ability, particularly on how well the two engines work together, any sense of whether it's under-powered given the decreased torque and HP, and of course mileage. Thanks in advance.

I received my xDrive40e on Friday

I took delivery of the 40e on Friday. Finished the paperwork and took off to go pick-up dinner. Car gives me a Recharging Malfunction after picking up Chili's to go. Tells me to pull over and bring it to a service center.

I get home and park the car and e-mail my salesperson. Couple hours later the car alarm is going off and I can't get it to stop or open the doors. It went into a safety setting after the car's regular battery continues to drain and then goes completely DEAD!

Call BMW roadside assistance and they show up and jump the car with a jump box. Drives the car onto the flatbed and the cars goes back to dealer after only 5 hours.

I pick-up the X5 diesel loaner on Saturday, because they didn't have enough drivers to drop it off at my house. They have a corporate engineer going to see the car today (NJ and very close to BMWNA). I hope to have the car back tonight if all goes well. This is one of the first 40e's on the road.

For the short amount of time I spent with the car, I love it! Start the car and no sound at all!

The diesel loaner has goobs of torque, but it is a 2015 and has no options. Kinda glad now that I didn't choose the diesel, just because of the VW issues going on now. Plus it doesn't feel as much as a new high tech toy.

I will do a full review of the car as soon as I get it back and drive it a bit more (plus pics).

Turbo, that really stinks. Hopefully you'll get it back soon. I'd be interested in your impressions of whether you think it was sufficiently powered. Good luck!

First year production for any new model is a risk in my book!
Good luck!

I took an extended drive in the new 40e and it definitely exceeded my expectations. In local driving, the electric motor alone is plenty quick to get around town. When you start pushing the car hard, the gas motor will kick in. The fuel economy on the car is also superb with just as much performance as the 35i and 35d. Can't get any better.

In the U.S. it starts at $62,100. Canada will for sure be different. Definitely more expensive but the advantages of the car is definitely worth the extra coin.

•Up to 13 miles of zero-tailpipe-emission pure electric driving
•Preliminary fuel economy estimates up to 55 MPGe
•Plug-in hybrid powertrain with combined output of 308 hp & 332 lb-ft torque
•0-60 mph in just 6.5 seconds

All I can find is 85litre / 18.7 gallon petrol tank. Beyond that 26mpg (driving >40 miles) to 44mpg (driving 30-40 miles) to 94mpg (driving <20 miles. Suggests a min range of ~500 miles.

Please users post real world figures! How much does the 2.0 engine use gas without e-motor? I read that it was 10-11 l/100km in Auto Bilds test. Their erange was about 20 km. Also can someone compare the boot vs the regular one. I am sceptical about boot size and erange....

Congrats and sorry for your problems turbodog72! I am thinking of making a leap from M50d to 40e or Audi etron or Tesla Model X.

Do we have to factor in a $1,100 level II electric charger right off the bat or it comes with vehicle free?

Shaw - the charger is mainly for the i3 and i8. For the X5 it only cuts charge time from 4 hours to 3 hours, so if you recharge overnight it is pointless - just use mains power. On the other hand if you need that extra hour, spend the money.
