Anyone looking to move to M2?
Looking to do ED next year and the new M2 looks to be a better choice over an M4. Thoughts?

I'm not sure about the move to the M2, but pretty soon, the mods will be looking to move this thread to the M3 vs.... section.

I do like that it is smaller and would take it over the current M3/M4, but the entire feel and engine don't compare to the E9X M3 in my opinion. Did the twin turbo thing with the N54 and it's fun for what it is, but it's just not for me (not to say that others can't enjoy it over the S65).

I've never been one to have to have the latest and greatest of anything. You could say, I am a little behind the times. I never owned a PS2, or regular Xbox. I just got a PS3 and XBox 360 a few years ago. I've still never tried the XBox One or PS4. I still rock an iPod nano from 2008ish. The newest iPhone I got before I gave up on Apple was an iPhone 4 (not the s). That being said, I don't really see the need to want to upgrade to a new car everytime a new model comes out. The M3 still puts a smile on my face from ear to ear everytime I drive it, and nothing BMW has put out lately really does anything for me. The only upgrades at this point I would consider are a Porsche 911 or a Gallardo. Until one of those is in my price range, the M3 will stay my weekend toy. I am sure the M2's will be nice, but just like the newer M3/4, they aren't for me. Plus, I make it a rule not to buy brand new cars, or the very first generation/MY of a new design. Negative equity sucks, and initial depreciation/risk of things going wrong with a brand new model are too great.

While the M2 is the only car BMW makes that really interests me, if I end up owning one, it will be 5-10 years from now. I'm hoping to find a way of keeping my E90 for the long haul.

It was my intention to trade it in on the new M4 when it came out. When BMW announced that the new M4 would have an I-6 with two hair dryers, I called my dealership and asked them to find me a M3. Even though I drove Porsches for the over a decade I lived in Germany, this M3 DCT ZCP is the best car I've ever owned. It would be hard to trade it for a M2. |

The only advantage M2 has over M4 is the price. Yes, its a smaller package and i like that(thats why i still have 135i), but this car is as heavy as m4/m3, downgraded engine with less power, shorter wheel base, less luxury, ect. I am not saying M2 is not going to be a great car, in fact i think it will be fantastic. But not as good as m3/m4, not even close. |

Gotta believe the M2 will dent M4 sales going forward. M4 still an awesome car M2 just another good and less expensive option.
Have to love the E92 as well. Get one while u can find a clean one for a great price. |

Doesn't seem worth it over an M4 if you can swing one. Weight difference is almost negligible and M4 has way more power. It comes down to whether or not having a smaller car matters to you.
ED M4 for me - and keeping the E92. |

I would go m4 over M2.
putting aside all the really subjective topics like looks, engine sound, Auto vs manual etc.. The M2 is just not fast enough of a upgrade. Looking at the specs of the car. its probably going to performance around what the E92 does. Both straight line, and track. I would like a decent upgrade when spending that kind of money. the M4 is decent amount faster over the E92. Other than the crappy engine sound, its a hell of a car. |

This is E92 M3 performance; your source for M2 performance? This is M4 performance. After driving the car at Hutchison Island Raceway and M Driving School, I don't feel that the modest performance increase justifies buying it as doing so comes at the expense of decreased drivability and an engine given to torque surges. Isn't this thing like 7 or 8 seconds faster around Nürburgring than the E92?
The front and rear fascia look a tad better than the F8x, but the pedestrian mirrors, seats and no carbon roof option kind of kill it on the aesthetic front. I would let performance sway me, but it's just another boring N55-based engine and for some reason it weighs practically the same as the M4. Everything about it screams budget M3, which I guess was kind of the point? I felt the 1M was a more goal-oriented build, with the engine/suspension/steering of its bigger brother, without all the gadgets and extra seats weighing it down. The M2 has little bits and pieces of its bigger brother, and strips out the seats and gadgets, but still weighs pretty much the same. Overall, very little flex factor with this car and the performance aspect isn't thrilling enough to drop 50K or whatever on it as a dedicated track vehicle. Speaking of engines, it's pretty funny to read the announcement thread. There is a already a divide, with people frothing at the mouth to defend this as "a true thoroughbred M engine, because it has piston rings from the S55!" I don't think I can roll my eyes any harder. I am interested in what they will do with the M2 GTS, if there are plans for that sort of thing. Stick the S55 in there, lightweight seats, carbon roof and the other weight-saving measures they implemented in M4 GTS, and you would have a great little pocket rocket. Probably won't happen though, or would be priced at a level that would just land me in a Porsche again. |

I've been anxiously awaiting for the M2 to debut. The M4 while more powerful, and lighter than the E92 just feels too big. I could settle for an M3 for the 4 doors, but for a coupe I prefer something closer to E46 size. While both handle great the steering feel is no where near as good as the E9X. I will wait to hear the reviews to see if they have improved it in the M2. BMW has heard the complaints, and have fixed the exhaust sound IMO. Hopefully they've made progress with the electric steering. The only things I can complain about now are the seats, and the weight. Hopefully they add a competition package in a couple of years and drop the weight a little bit. The stitch pattern on the seats make them look cneap IMO. They could kill 2 birds with 1 stone by offering speed cloth as an option. I'm happy with the exterior of the M2.

Was really hoping for BMW to win me over again with the M2 but sadly didn't really hit it for me. The E9x in my opinion is the last great M with character. I'll most likely be moving on to a zo6 or Porsche in the future. Otherwise I'll stick to my E92 when it comes to BMW
