Exhaust Options
As I research my M3 purchase I think a mild exhaust upgrade will be early on the list.
Can someone please outline the general options? I assume there is a simple option of just the back half and leave the cats in place? Is catback replacement of the entire system or just from the cats back ? |

You can run the stock xpipe and run a muffler section if you are just looking for sound. If you are looking for the best bang for the mod, I would suggest getting rid of the cat and running a tune. There are a vast amount of information about pretty much ever since setup that you can run on your e9x. Just take some time to figure out what sounds best for you. |

you can also buy test pipes and cut your stock x pipe to remove the primary cats and then use the clamps that come with the test pipes to install them. This, form what I have ready, will give you a emission code, which can be removed with a tune. And there is a vast number of test pipes, x pipes, and cat back exhaust options available from numerous manufacturers.

Catback means everything after the cats (not including), therefore it does not affect emissions. Our OEM x-pipe is all one piece which includes primary cats, secondary cats, x-pipe, and resonators, so there is not really such thing as a catback for this car, just a full x-pipe and muffler.
Some people piece together a full x-pipe with components from different companies to get what they want (high flow cats, test pipes, crossover sections, etc.)

if you are looking to pass emissions (not sure how it works where you are) I would just run a muffler and see how it sounds. Then you can build off that. Remember adding a x-pipe (depending on what it has) can change the sound of the exhaust.

Made in Australia for Australian M3 owners by an M3 owner (well until last week) Dave Dee. Don't waste your time and money going overseas mate.

But the M3world one is a real option if you are after an old school muscle sound. Plus with the AUD floundering at 0.70, the $$$$ to bring something in from OS. Here is a video from a while back (which I hope to update at a coming track event). |

Keep in mind the tone and volune changes when you delete the primary cats which will most likely be your first power mod. This can make a great cat back only system sound bad as the sound change is significant.

First thanks for the awesome support guys, very much appreciated
Depending on what your plan for the car is should be a guide to what you choose. If you don't want to a tune and the car is a daily driver, just a cat back or rear section only will give good sound results but gains are not big, but the driving experience is improved dramatically when it produces a sound you like. There are options with the rear section, valved or non valved. Valves are a great way to pull back volume and are good if you want an almost stock volume or if you go for a full X pipe which will increase the overall volume by about 20% The appearance of the back of the car is also greatly improved ditching the silver nutnack A full X-pipe is the ultimate for performance and sound. The entire OE exhaust is crush bent and when you see one off the car it looks as though you've bottomed out the car and squashed the pipework. Its heavy and has restricted flow but is satisfactory for a person who is happy with the car as is. There are again lots of options with X pipes, but you will need an ECU tune reap the rewards of the power gains from deleting the front cats. The same applies if you just fit track (or test pipes) but not to the same degree. The primary cats are 400 cells per inch, the secondaries are 200 cells per inch (CPSI) so the stock X pipe is heavily restricted, so the crush bends don't matter that much. On our local systems there are multiple choices, always feel free to call and discuss. These systems are also designed to ship rather than fit in a shop, all hangers are removable and pipework is made in equal lengths for efficient shipping and we've just has a carton made for that purpose. We use Pack and Send exclusively for shipping, not only is freight a great price and not one issue in all deliveries but one of our post members is an Exec there and was so helpful with advice and getting the logistics right when going through the design phase... thanks Rod There are a lot of choices on the market, some great stuff around and some second hand parts. Our systems are made locally (in Brisbane) by a person with 20 years experience in design and welding. All systems are fully mandrel bent, cats are 200 CPSI high flow metal and tips are 90mm dual wall black ceramic coated. |

I've given about half a dozen extended test drives over the last month. All 08 or 09, manuals and DCT. A few seemed a little flat in the mid range and soft with bottom end torque in comparison to the others. (With same settings). Anyone else notice this? Perhaps just my perception.
But did get me wondering if one of the exhaust mods has a bias to improving low and mid range Tq?? I'd be interested in that. |
