What odd tools should I get that are E9x M3 specific?

As I stated in a previous thread, in the spring I am 95% chance getting a E9x M3 (most likely E92).

What odd tools, socket sizes, etc. should I get that are E9x M3 specific?

Really anything what did you not have before your M3, but had to purchase to maintain it?

I picked up a power drill, sockets between 5mm-17mm, 19mm socket, 21mm socket, I think I have a 24mm socket too, and the socket for the oil filter housing (sorry forgot what size this was). I'd get a 17mm deep socket also since this'll be for your wheel nuts.

Torque wrench up to at least 100 ft-lbs (harbor freight will be good enough for wheel studs and non critical parts)

I think the main odd tools I didn't have before my e92 M3 were torx sockets, external torx sockets (E-torx), and torx keys.

One of the most important is the 36mm socket to undo/redo the oil filter housing for oil changes.

Torx and inverted torx. Other than that, I swapped a motor with the regular tools that I used on my previous Hondas and Toyotas. You'll need a long t55 torx for the flywheel and a long t30 for the oil pan.

YES. Don't try to swap plugs without it.

^ Agreed, get some Torx and E sockets, those are something i've never had to use before the M3.

- You need a 30" socket extension to reach the E12 bellhousing bolts if you ever have to drop the trans/change the clutch, and a swivel socket or swivel extension.

- 14MM Hex socket for the rear diff fluid.

- If you ever plan to DIY bearings using OEM rod bolts you need a super accurate torque wrench and an accurate angle torque wrench. ARP bolts just require an accurate torque wrench.

- Invest in a screw extractor for the front rotor set allen screws, they are aluminum and WILL strip trying to remove the rotors. Replace them with a stainless steel replacement from ECS.

I will add more as i remember all the hardware store runs i've had to take during DIY jobs.

I got the 301 piece tool set from HF, and it has almost everything I need. Why the hell is the oil filter housing bolt 36 mm???

not really a tool, but lots of money in a maintenance reserve will be helpful.

Its not a bolt. Its the housing cover on top.
You're getting the E9x M3 mixed up with E46 (which uses a bolt).

Because if the 36mm hex head on cap was smaller it would get rounded off because of the force needed to break the oil filter cap loose. It's plastic!

FYI... Use a 6 point socket on it!

All the tools above are good to have. I would also get a trim remover (plastic), low profile jack with puck adapters, flat n Phillips screwdriver set (craftsman, snap on or similar quality), breaker bar, OSB II iCarly or similar

Not really tools but start buying detailing shampoo, waxes, sealers, microfiber towels in different sizes and colors, leather cleaner and if possible get the shop manual.

Also start stock up oil, coolant, brake fluid, windshield fluid,

And something that maybe you can't buy: time to start reading and watching "how to".

The last thing I would suggest buying is a "dealer kit". What is it? Well is a kit that you use when you have to leave the queen at the dealer. Kit should include mattress. Lol!!!

I've and many other member's on here, bought directly after car purchase the WIFI OBD 2 reader tool from Carly ( former known as BMWhat ).
It's a must when you're up to save some serious money, no unnecessary trip's to the dealer anymore, very helpful tool.
It read's and clear's check engine light code's and all that operated by your smart phone.
The second you don't understand the code's you send over an in-app feature, an help request to Carly and certified technician's help you figuring out the issue with your car. ( for free...compare that with nerve wrecking dealer & mech appointment's and you understand what Iam talking about)
So it basically save's you a ton of money.
Oh and as a positive side effect you can code your car with...brighter angle eyes...dvd enabling...
Just check out the humorous vid in my sig, it explain's pretty well how to use the WIFI OBD 2 dongle and on top of it give's you the opportunity to save money on your first WIFI OBD 2 reader dongle purchase.
