got hit tonight

just left the house. roads were very slick. was going slow but driver coming other way was all over the place and hit me head on. airbags deployed on the other vehicle, but not on the x5. probably because i wasnt going to fast and was trying to slow down.
the other driver got arrested for dui too.

how bad does it look? i measured both front wheels and the passenger wheel got pushed back one inch. that means the chassis is tweaked, right?

Sorry this happened to you.
So hard to look at this. It looks expensive but it doesn't look like you're car will be totaled.

it's a lease, and i was thinking of keeping it long term, but now that it got a good hit, that changes things. this sucks.

I've been in a similar situation a few years ago. I was hit while stopped at a STOP sign!
Don't worry about it. You'll probably see the LCI X5 or leaked pics of the next X5 and you'll forget all about keeping your current car.

This sucks, but think about it this way: no matter how nice, the X5 is still a mass produced piece of machinery. You are not.

Your X5 did it's job today to protect the more valuable asset: your ass

Good job, X5!

Sorry this happened, but based just on the picture it looks to be purely cosmetic.. Of course the bodyshop would need to assess the extent of the damages.

@turboawd , glad you are ok. Sad to see what happened to the X5 though.
It looks like the main chassis is not tweaked.

Totally agree with realsgy. The X5 did do it's job. My old E70 was in an accident I think worse then what I see and honestly they did such a great job fixing it that you would not have known. Good thing you are ok, the X5 will get fixed and if you feel come the end of the lease it's not right then you have your out.

so should i demand i go through a bmw recommended body shop?
what if my insurance tells me to go elsewhere?

plus i'll probably get stuck with a cheap rental while paying for a bmw lease. any recourse to that?

Yes! No insurance company can force you to go to a specific shop. While you probably won't get a luxury SUV as a rental, they can't give you an economy class Chevy Aveo either. Tell them you need the space of an SUV every single day as you transport kids, gear, etc. so will not settle for an economy car.

Sorry to hear/see this, btw, but as always, you're safe, so that's all that matters.

I'd be more inclined in going to BMW or a shop you know and trust. In my case I took it to BMW and my insurance didn't say a thing. Told them where it was and that was it. Mind you that goes back about 7+ years so I'm not sure if that has changed.

I'd find the most reputable shop around, may not be a BMW shop, to do the paint work. Most likely a shop of this caliber does mostly imports and plenty of BMWs anyway. Unfortunately, it's often a huge headache to get the work done right the first time. Most dealers rush through work and you won't be happy, at least this is my experience.

As others stated, it's just an x5 and most importantly you and your family are ok.

First, glad you are ok. As my 80 year old father says, you can fix everything except death.

Could be chassis. But it could also be steering assembly, drive shaft, control arms.....there is a lot of stuff there between suspension, steering and drive shaft. Leave it to the experts to decide....It may be combination of BMW and body shop work.

You are not far off from total: I see hood, bumper, panel, LED lights, grill, trim pieces, a fog light (clips break easily), plus all the things that my have pushed the weeks back. I see "salvage" cars on eBay that have about the same level of damage.

i called my insurance(state farm) and found out i dont have rental coverage.
so i called the other driver's company(american family), and i'll have to wait till monday, and they will probably give me a rental from what i was told.
i'm guessing i'll be without the x5 for at least 2 to 3 weeks, especially considering its the holidays and a busy time for body shops. and to be paying for a lease and not even get a rental? that blows

You'll be in a rental for much longer unfortunately. It'll take 3+ weeks to even get into the shop probably and then the actual repairs will take another couple weeks.
You shouldn't even have to deal with your insurance company. All on the other guy's insurance!

I'd consider changing insurance companies in the future. An accident where you were hit by a driver taken in for DUI is an easy case. They should provide you with what is necessary and recoup it from the other drivers insurance.

so the x5 is still in my garage. waiting until tomorrow for adjuster.
i took a look closer underneath. did i f*ck my engine up by idling it after the wreck? it appears the corner of my radiator is gone. i didnt see any fluid on the ground after the wreck, so i kept the x5 running, since it was 20 degrees outside. engine was running for maybe 2 hours, until i finished with the cops and drove home. but no warning lights came on. also my bumper support looks pretty tweaked. damn...

turboawd , that is just an intercooler.
You won't damage your engine with what you did.
With keeping the engine running on idle, it won't give you a problem. You will only feel no power during a drive, since you are losing a boost in between the turbo to the engine.

ah ok, then the oily residue i see is just whats normaly inside the cooler?

i do remember the engine would idle up once in a while while i was sitting in the x5 waiting.

If its a lease I wouldn't worry to much about it the engine issues or whatnot... let the at fault insurance company handle the repairs to BMW's spec. and pay for your rental needs and carry on with you life.. On your next lease you can spec out a new X5 the way you want (in case you had some second thoughts on this X5).

This is what I thought of the instant I saw the Kidney Grills

On the Other Hand, You're very lucky that you had your ass sat in that X5 because it did exactly what it had to do! Other than that, I think it'll be fixed BUT that'll take a while considering that it's the holidays now...
