u can already order the M-DCT. M-DCT is "automatic" enough for your needs. this is the "automatic" option for you. the reason why i have it in quotes will be revealed once people start bashing me for calling it "automatic"

It doesn't look like anyone outside BMW has driven it yet, so no one knows for sure.

Unfortunately no one outside of BMW knows this but the technology does allow for a pretty decent auto mode in these Dual-clutch setups, the VAG DSG gearbox work very well in both auto mode (normal and sport). I can't understand the logic of 5 auto modes but will hold judgement until I have sampled the box myself to see how it compares to the Audi/VW version.

So basically if BMW's programme is wrote correctly then is should be brilliant.

Full scale production of the "automated clutch" M-DCT will occur in June. There will be limited production March-May. I have a suspicion that all March-May production has already been spoken for, however that is an educated guess not based on anything that BMW has said.

no problem, seems it's gonna be a couple of months before it's produced on a large scale, but you can order it now.

my wife doesn't bother with shifting on the smg, but the auto mode shifts pretty jerky and slow if you're not familiar with the transmission. So I'm hearing an earful whenever she takes the M5 out.

That's the best answer yet. However given the way the question was asked, I'd imagine the OP doesn't know what M-DCT is.
