and this???

Or is it just a marketing gimmick?

LL04 is a Mid-Saps version of LL01.

LL04 ACEA C3
LL01 ACEA A3/B4

Both oils perform the same in your market (Germany) since your have Ultra Low Sulphur Gasoline.

I'm looking to get a quart of 0W-40 for emergencies, does it matter if I go with BMW branded or Mobil 1?

BMW does not make their oil. They buy from manufacturers and brand it as theirs. Stick with manufacturer of the oil inside the car already just to be safe. I think it is in fact Mobil 1 but not 100% sure. you will need to research the part number used.

BMW oil is currently made by Shell/Pennzoil (previously BP/Castrol).

Why not? Mobil 1 0w40 is one of the best off the shelf euro oils you can buy.
