How long a car can be stored

BIMMERPOST / Classifieds
Asking Price:
None

Item Interest
Bmw usa is giving me a loaner car until the air bag issue is fixed. The dealer says they don have a time line from bmw usa as they haven't got a timeline from takata airbag company.
I asked the service advice guy as to how long I can store a car without running it he says just turn the car and take out of garage and park it back just put a trickle chagree on it.
Is this the right way to do it right now I have tank full and had done 45k miles service recently.I have 46700 miles so far.
Please give your advice
Thanks for the help

More importantly... BMW will give me a loaner until it's fixed? And since there's no fix yet... That loaner could be a long time?

Details please? I got my recall notice but my m3 is way out of warranty... Do I just go to the dealer and get a loaner?!?

I heard the loaners were for 2013 cars and up from BMWCCA news. Don't quote me on it, but if you're out of warranty, it might be hard. Not hurt in trying.

I stored my E92 for 18 months while I was deployed: simply put, my dad (who is 72) took it out drove it around the block one a week to keep it going. Since the first replacements probably won't be until end of summer, lets say 5-6 months, start it up once a week and drive it around the block. You should be fine.

You'll be fine if you hook up a trickle charger. I use a CTEK. They're pretty inexpensive.

This is probably the worst thing you can do to it...

If you plan to start and drive it, you need to ensure the oils are fully warmed up and not just the engine oil, the trans and diff, primarily. I would say at least a 30 minute drive if you plan to drive it or simply dont. Throw a trickle charger on it and make sure tire pressure is good. If longer than 4-6 months, add some stabyl in the gas and leave it be.

Well here I am two years later with a running car. Let me rephrase yes do your normal warm up don't just get in and drive. The point is a few months is not going to kill anyone. Drive it around to make sure the tires don't get warped from sitting in one spot and the engine sees some life. You can always ask your SA

I am going to put the car on jack stand and connect the battery tender so tire won't get damaged sitting in one spot, the only worry I have is would it not effect not driving for let say 6 month

good luck OP. Plenty of options and only these are only recommendations. Again I would check with your Service Advisor (or local BMW) for there recommendation. Good luck, I'm sure you'll be fine.

They told me to drive out of garage once every 2 weeks n put it back so I might just drive around the block couple miles and put it back on stand

Your motor wont explode from this... but youre prematurely wearing internal mechanical parts when just starting it once a week to drive it around the block...
