Vs STI- Video, Isle of Man

I'm sure many of you have seen this video. While i am loving the new M3, i'm not sure if it really has my heart just yet. For 300 less a month, the STI is pretty compelling. Maybe if they do a refresh and make a better/ more economic engine i'll go for an STI next, i get a pretty good discount with subaru that will bring a nicely equipped STI to around 410 a month, zero down, and .10 a mile over mileage!

anyways, just some food for thought... not that i am ever going to street race or track either of them, was always curious:

on back roads can an STI outperform an F80 M3? think the next generation STI will?

What would win in this race. F80 M3 or STI!?

Don't care if it would win, cheap, cheap, cheap. Everything feels cheap in them, the boxer 4 is the worst sounding engine ever and it's so light in the a$$ at low revs. No thanks. Maybe for a winter car.

The only thing that would save you is the AWD which is obviously easier to deal with at high speeds, but I think with a skilled driver, that advantage goes away.

The WRX/STI was great in 2003. 13 years later these cars put up the same performance numbers but cost way more. It'd be like the F8x putting up E46 M3 performance numbers.

Wait until the next gen. Eventually, well maybe, Subaru will get their heads out if their asses.

No kidding, when a Camry can pull on you and you're supposed to be a performance car, that's a shame. Mitsu abandoned the Evo and Subaru is frozen in time with the same engine, output, and horrible efficiency. Everyone is turbo charging and increasing output, all of it's competitors caught up. The Focus RS may even surpass it, if next gen increases power and updates the engine to the two liter then I'll throw it right next to my M3.

There was an STI in my group at my most recent track day and I ate him for lunch. I guess it all depends on what you are looking for.

It's my understanding that rally cars are limited in engine displacement and output numbers. Since the STI is inspired by Subaru rally cars, this explains the small increases in HP/TQ...

I owned a 2011 and a 2015 STI. They have a lot of character and are genuinely fun cars to drive hard. With the F80, street driving isn't as fun because first, traction, and second it gets up to speed ridiculously quick!

But the STI's are SLOW from anything other than a launch. You will regret it, performance and look/feel wise. I am 26, and felt embarrassed driving an STI with a big wing.

Like I said, fun, but very slow. If you want a 1.2 second 0-30 time the STI is perfect for that kind of thing, if you learn to launch it properly(it's not the easiest to launch)

Burnt a valve on my 2015 STI at 3k miles. Don't mod, unless you want to build it up and don't care for warranty. If your looking to keep it stock and want a fun, cheap, usable car.... I'd say go Golf R or Focus RS.

I bought a brand new STI and got rid of it 6 months later. Everything felt so cheap inside and was not thrilled with the performance

Lmao, you will be getting less than what you paid for: 2003 tech in 2016(17). Sti isn't in the same league as an M3. Unless you are city street light racing or driving in the snow find something else.

FYI, if you plan on tracking it you will be in limp mode half way through your first session of the day...

And if you will be using it as a DD, you will immediately regret your decision as soon as you drive it off the lot and drive it to work the next day.

Went from a 135i to a 2013 STI and the entire time it felt like a huge step down for very little (if any) performance gain. Sure the 4 door hatch was more practical, and AWD was nice for Tahoe trips, but man living with it day to day was hard.

Harsh ride, LOUD road noise (even with lots of dynamat and changing tires to PSS), awful stereo, economy car interior that rattled and creaked like a 1990 Geo Metro, extremely dated engine & tech.

It was fun when I could push it hard, the AWD is among the best, and it had a fantastic 6MT, but on a daily commute it was annoying as hell.

Don't do it man. If you want more engaging, get an M2 or maybe even an RS3.

I work from home, i don't daily commute- my commute is 60 %- drive through some back roads through the airport or train station, and the other 40% are longer road trips to MD or Buffalo, which i can rent a car or drive my 4,000 winter beater ( which is louder than a STI) plus...STI is .10 cents a mile over mileage.... the m3 is now like .30!!:thumb down

My only thing is this:

Long road trips for personal, sure i'll take it.

For work, m3 economical enough. with mileage overage charges, it turns out to me losing money. with STI it's .10 cents, so i could sell my toyota work beater

Deep CT snow and VT Snowboard trips- I'll be getting snow tires. Can i REALLY drive it in the winter? ( could sell my Jeep)

I need to get used to leaving it at airport or train station, but i'd get a lot less frustrated dinging a 35,000 STI than a 67,000 m3.

STI is over 350 a month less!

How much do you think RS3 will be? i bet more per month!

Subara engines are garbage. I've had 2 different friends blow completely stock motors on their STI's.

Even the boxer in my FRS is disappointing. The power delivery has annoying torque dips and the sound leaves me flaccid. Unfortunate bc I love everything else about the car.

I'm pretty sure I'll never step into a Subaru dealership for the remainder of my life.

Obviously the cost difference is a major concern for you so get the STi. It seems you're fishing for confirmation that than M3 and STi are comparable in performance, comfort, etc.

They're not.

Just buy/lease the STi, save the $350 a month / 20 cents a mile and move on to the next life decision.

money isn't a huge issue, the point of the thread was really to see if the STI is comparable performance on these back roads as m3, i am not an expert here, so really have no idea.

The RS3 will be M3 expensive (and way more expensive if leasing). Why not check out the Evo in its final production year?
