ESS won't remove cold start sequence on SC vehicles?

Got my ESS tune today for my 550 kit and I noticed it still sounded like my cold start feature was activated though I requested it be removed. I emailed ESS asking about it and they said they don't remove the cold start cat heating cycle on supercharged vehicles. Hmm. Well then. had I known that I might have gone with BPM. I can't imagine why they wouldn't but oh well. too late now. my question is (aside from why they would choose not to do this option on SC cars) is are there aNY other options for turning this feature off?

They gave me the same response but they explained that removing the cold start could result in stalling when S/C'ed. Not that big of a deal to me but to each they're own.

That's normal. You want the cold start to prevent cold start stalling and closed loop fuel starvation issues.

Wouldn't it be smart to follow the recommendations of the company that makes the supercharger kit on your car? Seems like common sense to me.

Must be a new thing, last year when I got my supercharged and tune I asked for a cold start delete and they had no issues with it, furthermore the car has had no issues with the cold start disabled for over a year of abuse.

Funny thread, I specifically asked for the cold start to not be deleted from my car because I don't think it drives properly when cold with the cold start off. My tune does not have cold start activated...

Does the answer depend on whether you have cats or not?

I asked for cold start delete also, but didn't get it (about 2 years ago). I thought maybe it was forgotten..? I geuss not.

Being on the fence about it, i didn't bother to follow-up. I'm happy with the cold start though! 45 seconds of bitter sweet mayhem.

Catless in NJ. You probably got a short answer/response as they are in vaca-mode. (Not bashing.. probably well deserved)

I mean..sure if they gave an explanation of their reasoning. I didnt receive one and didn't understand why it would be beneficial to keep it activated. When I ordered my tune via EAS they didn't mention anything about this (though they did tell me they couldn't do the raised rev limit) so I was a little surprised to hear this.

I asked for it's removal but ESS explained to me that cold start is necessary in cold regions of the country. If you live in sunny Fla then you'd probably be fine but they don't remove it if you live where the winters get cold. It's that simple.....

I called ESS to get further explanation on why they don't offer it, and I was given the explanation that it is recommended to keep so that my cats will heat up properly. When I explained I don't have cats and that it is 100% pointless for me to have it and that EAS said it wouldn't be a problem to have that featured deleted and others have had it deleted on supercharged tunes, I was then told that they are strictly forbidden from removing it on any supercharged cars and that she was not aware of it being done in any case. Then she went on to explain that their research and development has shown that it is required to have it for the longevity of the engine and it is a liability if they remove it. Ohh kay..well I guess I'm stuck with it Not only is the feature annoying and 100% pointless at this point, but I actually wanted to remove it because I have been getting Secondary Air Valve codes so I wanted to delete the system completely as I suspect mine isn't functioning properly.

Sounds like she does not understand what she is talking about. Probably it is part of emissions so they wont touch it for most customers since they are at risk of a federal fine if they do.

If it really concerns you I'd talk with AJ. That's who I spoke with and he told me it's not recommended as it could create issues with stalling. He did not specify if this was a concern that was isolated to locations that experience colder temperatures but based on the response above it seem that weather does play a factor. Again, AJ@ESS would be the best person to speak with as he is their tuner and was active in the development of the kit.

Agreed, you need to talk to AJ@ESS on this subject.

I have a cold start delete tune for mine, no issues when I requested it. Have been running it for two years.

I do have an idle hunting issue when starting the car if the car sits for 15-60 minutes after being at full temp, which is attributed to the cold start being removed and the parasitic drain of the blower pulley system on the engine. It dies maybe once out of ten times, and lasts for maybe 3 seconds when hunting. Not a big deal to me.

I think a true cold start feature should be left intact for cold starts. But tbe 30 seconds of lean running to heat up cats is unnecessary for those without cats.

Bumping the idle up a 200-300 rpm would also help idle with supercharger. Not sure whether any SC tunes do so. I used such a tune on my supercharged E36M3 with LTW flywheel.
