Does the DCT shift faster with the stick than with the paddles?

This is probably all in my head (especially since coming off of years only owning 3 pedals), but does the DCT stick seem to shift faster than the paddles? Should there be any difference in gear-shifting speed between the two?

it's quicker to flick the paddles then it is to pull the lever towards you. The reaction is the same but the action takes longer with the shifter.

The reaction to the shift input is identical regardless of whether you used the shift lever or the paddles.

Both shift methods are equal in terms of shift time afik.

We're forced to use both unless you're really good contortionist and able to find the correct paddle to work when the wheel isn't straight. I can't understand why these paddles aren't attached to the column... In a predictable place...

As to why I would have such an issue, there's a few roads with sweeping turns and off ramps nearby where you can up shift. Also more than a few decreasing radius off ramps where a down shift is just soo much fun.

Thinking Like I Own a Standard

My last car was a standard and my mind is still programmed as such. While I believe my reaction time is quicker with the paddles for obvious reasons (my hand(s) don't have to move), I find that I mostly shift with the shifter in lieu of the paddles. I love the DCT and may one day use the paddles as much as the shifter, but until my small little mind can sort out the realities of the DCT, I will continue to drive and shift (when in such a mode) however I do with a smile on my face.

I think the action itself takes longer with he the shifter, but coming from manual cars, I enjoy shifting with the DCT stick more than the paddle. After 15 minutes of driving, I honestly feel almost like I am driving a manual car again (minus the clutch of course). Love that downshifts are forward and upshift backwards. It is very intuitive if you're come from a manual car.

Sounds like you are moving your hands more than you should be. Paddles on the wheel is much preferable, IMO.

The actual DCT execution of the gear change is identical.

The time it takes for you to initiate the gear change request (flicking the peddle vs. moving the arm to touch the gear stick) may vary depending on how well you anticipate the shift point, and where you rest your right hand. If it's on the steering wheel, then it's faster to flick the hand peddles. If it's in the proximity of the gear knob, then the gear stick.

On track, I shift via the hand peddles.
On public roads, I'm in auto mode, until I get bored, and then I start shifting manually. About 75% of the time its via the steering wheel peddles. The other 25%, I go into manual tranny throw-back mode, and work the gear selector lever.

I agree. I tried shifting with the paddles but find the shift lever so much more engaging.

not for me, shift levers on the column are one of the things I still miss from my GTR, you always new where they were. I f one is making a left turn and you want to upshift 1 to 2, I know have to use the shift lever instead of the paddles

I would get frustrated if the shifters where stationary on the column. When i race or drive hard my hards are located like a pro drivers, 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock. Right with the shifters. Just a flick of the finger to downshift and up shift and the shifters stay with your hands into corners and bends. If my wheel is turned and the shifters are stationary i would have to lift my hand to reach them. Doesnt sound intuitive for a drivers car. I guess just personal comfort. Maybe if I was turning a sharp corner or something like that at an intersection they would be good stationary. But not on a fun wild winding road.

They actual work really well when they are long, then you can touch no matter
where your hands are, the M3 on the wheel are a lot shorter. Again on a track or some twisties they are fine on the wheel, it just those freeway on ramps and left turns where the paddles get lost with the wheel cranked that hard

I'm a paraplegic and I have the paddle shift wired into my hand controls. The shifts are as quick as if I used the paddles or gear shift. I use my index finger to up & down shift. Its the closest to a manual gear shifting I will drive. I love it. For steering I use a spinner knob.

As far as which one is quicker between the paddles or gear shift, it depends on personal preference, IMHO. Using my index finger its pretty quick.LOL

Thank you all.

I wanted a faster hardtop convertible with a DCT so I traded my 2011 335i convertible for the 2016 M4. Since I can't ride motorcycles, a convertible is the next best thing.

I had the same reaction when I first drove a car with paddles. It's more intuitive to use the shifter. It took a few cars with paddles until I became comfortable with them.

The shifter is fun, reminds me of my buddies 1971 Challenger with a slapstick shifter.
