Rod bearing swap now baaaad ticking

Hi guys,

just recently I got my rod bearings swapped, that were in extra ordinary condition, considering I had over 162.000 km on the odo.

However the day I got my car back, it had an noisy tick at cold starts and now it has an even louder cold start tick.

In other words, I need help from ///M-powerbelgium to confirm my problem...

Have you asked the installer? What Bearings did you swap over to? That definitely doesn't sound right!: Hope you get resolved soon.

If the power steering was touched, check the fluid. That was my problem after I swapped my motor.

Vsix, always tricky with video sound but can't say I hear anything strange with your cold start noise. Sound like the ususal raw and rough S65 during cold period.

Thank you helmsman but the car developed an raw out-of-rythm ticking at cold starts, that it didn't had before. Brrrlll-tick-tick-tick-deee-tick-tick around 0:19 then I'm cranking it.

Anyhow vid is sent to the shop. Really curious to see whats going on.

Just picked up my CPO '13 M3 and curious about this. For the 1st 10-20 seconds I get a rougher sound (pretty similar to the OP's sound), then it settles down, and by 60-90 seconds I have a nice smooth purr. Normal I'm guessing from your comment? Just turned over 15K miles today.

Thank you my friend for your PM

Yeah.. I heard about your situation and your bearing replacement .
At exactly 22 sec. runtime in your video I can hear the cold start clunk noise during start up and that's 100% sure , you had the cold start clunk noise before your bearing replacement as well and is Vanos Gears related .
A lot of S65 owners have this problem , me included ...but that's not the problem of what you are talking about .

As for the ticking noise it's impossible to hear it during the cold start cycle because too much noises are involved .

So I would love to hear another video from you with a "warm engine" , just like your previous video that I received from you and from before your bearing replacement .

With a warm engine..
1- Hold your cam close in front of your "driver side front wheel"
2- Rev. your S65 "slowly" up to 3K rpm's and repait this 3 X .

Note: If you don't hear ticking noises with a warmed-up engine , I'm sure your S65 is fine .

On a related note: How hard is it for your average SA/Indy to simply check the state of one's rod bearings? Seems like an involved job, yes?

I found an installer who did bearings on the S54 motor and had him do my S65. Talk to the E46 and E36 guys and they should know who is meticulous with this stuff.

To inspect a bearing you have to drop the oil pan and remove 2 "one time use only" bolts (TTY). At that point all the labor is basically already done to replace the bearings so makes no sense to "just inspect". Also bearing wear is not always consistent for the entire set so you can't be 100% sure the others are exactly the same.

Possible exhaust leak? But like others have said its hard to tell with the cold start. How does it sound warmed up?

thats called the cold start cycle. engine runs at a higher rpm to get the catalysts hot faster. this is normal- every m3 does it. op may have something else going on.

Rod bearing shop suggested, I should replace the header gaskets, as it sounded for them like an exhaust leak.
It is not bearing related but I'll definately take my advice from ///mpower-belgium and will send him another engine sound sample.

So far ///M-car will get as planed motoroil along with new pre-cat sensors changed. Will be tackled coming saturday.
