DCT downshifting to 1st?
I just picked up my E90 M3 after I purchased it around 4 months ago
I used to have an E92 DCT which I would downshift to 1st when in M Mode (which was pretty much all the time), Now out of fear of longevity can downshifting to 1st cause any issues? I know the DCT software protects the engine and wont allow damaging shifts. |

Interesting question, lets see what the experts have to say.
Loving the blips I cant help myself from occasionally do proper down shift also to 1st. Being an old MT guy its kind of against nature but its not like the DCT miss sync rings so assuming its perfectly okay. |

I mean... Of course if you do it all the time it'll put extra stress on the motor and trans. The car rev matches to avoid some of that. It works as intended but your changing the cars revolutions suddenly and rapidly. I asked a similar thing when I first got my m3 because who doesn't love that sound.... But it's a question with no answer. You can do that all day and not have a single issue and drive the car into the ground till it hits 200k. while another car might never see redline or aggressive down shifts but still self destruct. all we can say is keep up with the bmw maintenance along with suggestions brought up in our forums and don't downshift at every red light. That said, other than a few known potential problems with the s65 motor, the car was built to handle much more than you can throw at it on the streets. It's no Chevy LS x small block or e36 inline 6 (some of my favorite motors in terms of how much abuse they can take) but the s65 is still one hell of an engineering achievement.

the wonders of the DCT at its finest, downshifting into first while you drive holding a hamburger.

yeah, but when he enters Portland, he needs to do a sex change to be a lesbian and trade in his M3 for a Subaru Outback.

Technically every time you shift, you are causing wear. So yes, downshifting to 1st will cause wear.
I wouldn't go around downshifting to 1st at every stop light and letting the engine speed skyrocket to 6 grand, but reasonable downshifts should be fine. It's not exactly in BMW's (or Getrag's) best interests to design a transmission that will fail early and often -- it can take some abuse, but there's no reason to beat on it for no reason.
