BMW M3 best resale value in class

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
For whatever it's worth. I always had a feeling the M3 had tremendous resale. Interestingly the WRX had the most retention value in its class and if you really want best resell value, get a "Midsize Traditional SUV"!!!

Not surprising to me. I lost very little money on my 15 over two years of ownership and flipping to a 16. Now this M4 ill probably lose my ass on.

A few thoughts:

Subaru resale values are ridiculous, as are jeep wranglers. I had a 2008 subaru legacy GT i traded in in January 2013 (4.5 years after purchase) with 94k miles on it (high mileage). I bought it for $25k (MSRP of $29.5k) and traded it in for $14.5k. I.e. 58% resale value with 94k miles on it vs. purchase price, or 49% resale vs. MSRP. ANd that has held for Outbacks and Legacy's since 2008.

Recent jeep wranglers - as noted - are even higher. Since the 2012 pentastar engine emerged, truly just ridiculous resale.

On BMW m3s, obviously more of a specialty item. What I've seen in private party reinforces this. CLEAN, one-owner, 2008 m3s with 50-60k miles on them (7-8,000 miles/year). I see them going for >30k - that's 8 year old models holding at around 50% resale in private party.

Great news coupled with the fact that BMWFS is now offering 0.9% financing.

Most surprised about the panamera on this list (mostly because it looks like the ugly love child between a 911 and Q50) But I guess you have to compare it to the other duds it's up against in the same class.

Well, to be fair, the 5 year old M3 they are referring to includes the E92 which is now an M4. I traded in my E92 M3 for 63%-ish after almost 4 years. I think the M4 will do OK when they hit the 5 year mark. The F80 M3 will do even better mainly because they were produced in more limited numbers.

the resale value of WRX's is insane, you could buy one drive it for 5,000 miles and sell it for practically what you got it for lol

glad i bought mine

I think the reason why there are fewer m3's, because it was built in only one factory, while the m4 is built in more than one in germany.

Can you or someone explain to me to high resale value of a WRX??! Is it limited or something I'm missing?

I can't besides they are simply incredibly popular. And here's my personal anecdote:

In 2005, I bought a Saab 9-2x Aero 5-speed manual - which was a Subaru WRX Wagon with very minor Saab touches to it. In reality, it truly was a superior WRX Wagon as it had an STI steering rack, beautiful Enkei wheels, and better damping setup. Anywhooooo

Because it was Saab, and no one was buying Saab, they were being firesaled. I bought mine for $18,500 ORDERED from the factory with heated seats. 0% financing for 5 years IIRC. MSRP was something like $24-25k.

I drove it 9,000 miles and traded it in for $20,000 to a dealership.

Really, I've had very good luck with Subaru products I probably should've stuck with them

I bought mine new in '03 for $24k. Sold it for $13k in 2011 with 50K+ miles. The STI holds its value even more.

damn. I knew it. Saab rebadged a great car and had shitty marketing to sell it. awesome story.

secondary markets can be fickle, but the subaru's are well known for their reliability and making great bang for the buck new, much less used.

bmw's secondary market are great for models that have a cult following like the 3, m3, even the 5 and the x3/x5 for status, but shit for the 7 series and 6 series for obvious reasons.

I used to drive one...I also sold it for a crazy high #, for the following reasons:
- Lowish MSRP to begin with, with lots of value built in (ie sophisticated AWD system, turbos, etc...)
- Very loyal buyer base
- Bulletproof reliability

The 06 WRX had STI steering, 4 piston brakes, and aluminum control arms. The Saab was quieter and more "mature" though.

I almost bought an 06 E46 M3 stick last year with 40k miles for $24k. A same year STI in the same condition goes for the same price. Pretty crazy when you consider it was about half the price when new. As a side note I probably should have bought that M3.

Had an '05 Sti that I bought new for ~ $32k. Sold it 2 yrs later with 20k miles on it for $25k. The same car now has a bunch more miles on it and they still sell for $20k for a good one!

Also bought another car on the list--'08 CRV. Paid 24k for it. Sold it 5 yrs later with 80k on it for $15k! All I had to do was change oil in it.

Let's not talk about my Cayman S though...

My "stripper" M3 (minus leather) still shows a higher value on KBB than I paid for it by about $6k, and this is after 1.5 year ownership. At the end of my lease I will probably buy it out flip it and lose next to nothing.

I have dealers knocking down my door to buy my 2013 Explorer Sport, offering my like $5k under what I paid for it new, and the truck has 55k miles on it!

I sold my 04 Cobra in 2014 for $25k and I got it for $35k new.

People say cars depreciate so quickly, but you just have to purchase the right car.

LOL.

Subaru and reliability should not be put in one sentence. This is coming from a 2011 STI, 2012 WRX, and 2015 STI owner.

My 08 LGT 5-speed manual was bulletproof over 94k miles. I think it had one electrical fault in the map light area in 94k (covered under warranty) and that was it. Oil & fluid changes and tires.

But I also know ALOT of owners of the same engine (ej257 and variants) had really serious engine issues. Ringland failures/blown engines. The only saving grace was new shortblocks were super cheap
