Drop in Filter Oiled Vs Dry

I couldn't find anything so thought I'd make a thread. What's everyone take on this? Pro and Cons?

Cons are if its oiled improperly or not ideally it will be more restrictive. Pros if it's oiled and cleaned properly it will be less restrictive than paper filters and filter better at least it's how they're advertised I'm sure this thread will turn into a fiery debate honestly all you get with oiled filters and more responsibility and better intake sound

I have wondered the same thing. There is a lot of information out there, but nothing that really answers the question "dry versus oiled". A lot of people would just say go with OEM. It filters the best, and if changed regularly, allows more than enough airflow to the engine. The oiled filters seem to be less restrictive to both airflow and dirt, which would make some sense. I chose to go with the AFE Pro Dry S because of this.

Here is a link to some air filter tests: http://www.billswebspace.com/AirFilterTest.htm

Now it is time to sit back and wait...

For me I personally like the dry filters due to less maintenance but I feel like the dry ones don't filter as well compared to the oiled ones.

I went with AFE Pro Dry S too. I believe they actually publish a filter efficiency rating. Most of the oiled do not.

I've ran K&N since owning the car. No issues. Maybe a bit more induction noise.

No wrong answer here.

Not sure if it still applies but in the past some oiled filters were known to gunk up MAF's. This is in general and not specific to S65. I went with AFE dry as well.

There's no MAF on the s65.

I stand corrected and you are correct, there is just the inlet air temp sensor. So does DME get air intake reading from air pressure sensor off of idle control system?

My understanding is that it has a MAP sensor that works from air pressure so some oil wouldn't really impact it.

For those who have used oiled ones in the past, how often did you have to clean and reoil them?

They say you CAN/SHOULD go for 50K. But I clean mine every 10K. After cleaning and oiling, I let the filter sit for 2 to 3 days so I know I've let it dry enough that even if I've over-saturated it, it's dried up for those days. I do this for both my E46 and E93.
