The throttle in this car is fricken binary!
Ok I know it's not really, but it's just so easy to mash the gas pedal and the car is literally going faster than I intended before I'm able to realize I'm going that fast. I have a bell set at 80 and it goes off nearly every time I drive the car. Often repeatedly.
The M3 is not my daily (that's a bicycle) and so I usually drive it either for errands or enjoyment. I'm not very accustomed to driving in traffic. I'm an early riser and I'm often able to avoid crowds just by time of day. Well Saturday was another story. My wife and I took the M3 down to San Antonio to have burgers and nachos at Chris Madrid's. (GTS - it was AMAZING). We drove twisty backroads through the Texas Hill Country and there were several times when I was able to pass safely on a 2 lane road and I accelerated way past necessary to overtake. I look like a stereotypical damn fool BMW M3 douche. Merging is sometimes just as bad. A woman gave me space to move over in San Antonio freeway traffic and I goosed it a little to move over and up, and took off like I was looking for the checkered flag. I seriously need to rehearse some restraint. The E90 M3 was very fast, but I had to rev it out to really get to the power. This car just goes from nothing to plaid. This is NOT a complaint, just an observation, and this is me calling an intervention with my right foot. Not that I'll stop enjoying it... It's just the when and where of it. /end rant |

The throttle definitely takes some "getting used to". You didn't mention if it's 6mt or DCT...
I have a DCT and in Sport+ it's very sensitive to inputs. Couple that with D3 and you get wicked acceleration with what you'd think is "normal" right foot flex. I think because you're not driving it often you're learning curve is longer than the average M3 driver. Just keep at it, you'll adapt to it eventually. In the meantime, keep it safe and have fun! |

I can totally relate...There have been a few times, on BBQ runs out to Llano, where I've hit 115 in my 328i while overtaking. The M3 I've ordered should be a real kick in the pants.

The crazy thing is, if you turn the nannies off in this car it is ridiculous how fast you can be going and still light up the tires. This happened to me the other day. Hit it in 2nd going almost 50. The back end got sloppy enough that I had to back off. Warm and dry also. Unreal.

Turbo engines are more thrilling in acceleration in general because of the turbo rush but the downside is they don't have the throttle finesse of NA engines. Last edited by Karmic Man; 08-31-2016 at 01:57 AM.. |

I kind of agree with the OP
It's an easy car to drive slow and an easy one to drive fast. but in-between it can be a bit tricky. One way is to short shift, so you aren't in that max power band |

know what you mean! felt similarly moving from the E92, but think I've adjusted mostly now. You're at 100+ very easily. I want to thank BMW for gearing the 6MT well(at least from me), and so you get that very satisfying shift at the top of 3rd at 104+ish.

Turn OFF the traction control (hold that button down for 3 seconds) and put the car in sport plus. Be CAREFUL! The car will drift like there is snow on the road. It will swap ends and bite you too.... This should be done while you are alone in the car. Passengers tend to need diapers lol.

Yesterday I entered a cloverleaf turn faster then usual and ended up entering a Chris Harris drift. Had to back off the throttle eventually before I hit the minivan inexplicably pulled over halfway down the turn. MDM mode. But yes, OP, completely agree that in this car there's a very fine line between looking professional and looking like a nut. Very binary.

Well, I experienced my first sideways drift last night while entering the freeway. I accidentally shifted down to 1st (usually I am on the 2nd), and gunned the gas, and experienced the "Wild Butt" phenomenon.
Note to self: Steering should always be straight when you decide to floor it! |
