Unhappy My DCT is being replaced under warranty after 5K miles

I started hearing a thud (and feeling it in my feet). Promptly brought it to the dealer and after 3 days was told I need a new transmission in my 2016 F82. No warning lights.

Was told by dealer he won't even hazard a guess on when I'll be back on the road... it's on 'back order'.

A stripped, bare bones 328i is what I have now until (I'm guessing) after thanksgiving. It's just the way he said "I'll call you every 5 days or so just to check in". If it weren't for the color (I lucked out and got the Azurite Black Metallic), I'd seriously be looking at lemon laws.

The car sounds driveable, why not get your old car back until the part comes in? If its just a thump and is more of annoyance, just drive it...

Not a bad idea but it might not be his choice unfortunately. BMW might request dealer keep the car until the part comes in to potentially avoid any supplemental damage that could happen if he continues to drive it.

it's out of my hands...they found a few filings in the fluid and it's out of commission. my guess is things were only going to get worse

Sorry to hear this OP. It sounds like your dealer is being straight forward and honest with you. No reason to think they won't be able to manage a repair and get her back to you as good as new. I will say this is better than the normal "ah my car (child) is in the shop, f BMW, I'm filing suit, I'll have to trade it unless BMW gives me $20k in loss of use (consortium for some) and throws in every M performance part possible and a trip to a 2 day driving school" post.

Sh1te happens. There is no logical reason to expect more issues popping up down the road just because the DCT has an issue now within the first year of ownership.

These cars look pretty solid, I'd chalk it up to a fluke. Raise some hell and and least get a 340i as your loaner. That's the first thing I would try to do.

Go from an M to BMW's base model? Talk about salt in the wound.

OP , assuming you financed/leased the car what happens to your monthly payments, you should not be paying if you cannot use the car for couple of months, i can understand it takes upto 14 days for BMW to fix it but not for several months. The other thing i would be worried about if they park the car in the open exposing it to all sorts of paint issues.

Agree with the part about reliability, but re the loaner I'd say the 328i is perfectly fine with decent power and space. Now the 320i, that's when I may agitate a little

i understand these things happen and one issue like this is not enough for me to start talkin' smack about the brand...just a little skiddish is all. i'll not try and raise to much hell until things get out of hand (ie perhaps on day 15 or so). i have a good relationship with the dealer - they've always done right by me and he did say he'll get me in a 340 asap. i'll take anything with satellite radio...how DO people listen to regular radio anymore? the lack of variety and commercials are mind numbing. how did i start on the transmission and end up bitchin about the radio? i appreciate the commiserating though

Call bmw NA and ask what they can do for you and ask them for a better car, pick one off the lot. If it's going to be 8 weeks they should hook it up

Will you please elaborate more on the "thud" noise that you are having with your car? Does it make the noise when accelerating or decelerating? My car is making an occasional "thud" noise when coming to a complete stop.

it started just when i put the car in reverse...i'd shift to reverse and about half second later there'd be a thud. maybe a clank is a better description. i had a friend see if he could hear it and it was louder from outside the car. you couldn't miss it. it was not normal. kinda felt and sounded like someone kicked my car. i made an appt at the dealer and then i heard it not only when put in reverse but from gears 3-4.within the few days from when i first heard it until i dropped it off it had become much more pronounced. i don't drive my car too hard by any means. i have some fun like i'm sure we all do but i'd guess i'm on the tamer side. i rarely shift 'manually', i just leave it in drive. but i'm usually in the sport plus mode accross the board.

Same thing happened to my DCT about 3 months into ownership (although I would describe mine more as a grinding when shifting from 2nd to 3rd). My car was out for about two weeks while the tranny was replaced. Haven't had any issues since. All-in-all I was pleased with how BMW handled my situation. For whatever it's worth, I had a 535d as the loaner.
