Garage List
Only if I had no choice (in the middle of nowhere, etc). I always carry around 2L now just to be sure.

When it ask to add a qt, the oil level is minimal which is no immediate threat. Don't cheap out!

Long answer short: It will work, but not ideal.

Long answer:
Depends on how many more miles you're going to be putting on this OCI. If you're due for a change soon anyways, then just go ahead and change the whole thing now to fresh oil of your choice. If you're ALMOST due (say 1-2k miles till you next change), then personally i would have no problem topping with M1 0W40 (also seeing that its colder now, having a little bit thinner oil and better low temp flow wouldn't kill the engine ***PLEASE DONT QUOTE ME ON THIS THOUGH, YMMV in case you engine blows up right after you topped it up lol***). I personally mixed TWS and 0W40 for SEVERAL OCI and it "worked" for my winter mixture. Also if you did some research, some Nissan GTR guys have been running TWS mixed with M1 0w40 and that didn't detonated their engine (of course, different much engine). If you are very concerned, just drive to your nearest BMW stealership and pick up a quart or two and top it up. Heck if they're nice they'll even top it up for free (but make sure its the spec you want and not just any oil). Cheers!

FWIW you can easily find 10W-60 Liquimoly at ordinary auto parts stores. Just call ahead to verify they have it in stock in the 1 liter bottles.

Sure. The manual says it's fine to do this. You're talking about 1 quart into an existing 8. It's not going to throw things wildly out of balance; the API spec requires oils to be miscible anyway.

I filled my whole engine with Mobil 1 0W40. So yes, okay to top up as well.

Manual says ok to top off with any weight high grade synthetic. I would do this in a pinch, but like others prefer to use the same oil all the time. For the most part, I dont need to add oil at all between changes so not something I come across except with a short fill.

For those who say no...why?? Plenty of people run Mobil 1 0W40, plenty of people mix different grades of oil with no ill effects in the M3. So what's the problem with topping off with 0W40??

I've run straight 0w40 and mixed 0w40 with 10w60... it's all fine. If you're just topping off, the amount of oil you're adding is so small, it makes no difference at all.
